Petrol in Diesel

Brecon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Brecon and the remainder of Powys, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Our technicians will tell you what your next stage is. Ring us — it goes ahead of everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And once started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for just those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street Superior, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
  • Before you call, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts LD3 7 — that's what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and whether the engine has fired — the three replies settle the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Never run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that high-pressure pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over the Renault Megane at the nearest station while the work gets done, and we would much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

Here is what a job in the car park by Rorkes Drift normally looks like. Our engineers get to the car, ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three answers decide most of the work. Then the contaminated mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get cleaned, and the filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our technicians start it, check it runs correctly, and you drive away.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to The Groves, it is doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Our technicians rinse the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked up near Brecon Coliseum a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us and leave it off.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the filter, into your lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 3008 that made it by St. Michael's Catholic Church needs its system cleared. Draining is not the same thing.

Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a good chunk of it ends. Still at Gulf? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.

At a forecourt, this is spotted with the motor never fired, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where the car stands.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Can we reach your corner of Brecon?

These same trips bring us to Pendre, Uplands, Pontwilym, Llanfaes and Cefn Cantref along with Brecon, which is a riverside town.

There are dedicated pages for most places across Powys, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing whatsoever about if we come. Ring us and enquire rather than assuming, particularly when you are on a border or anywhere your phone misreads.

This map marks the area this page spans. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.

Stranded by the roadside anywhere in Brecon?

Some people have no suitable place to pull in at all. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge beside Ship Street, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Okay right there? Stay with it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a technician heading out to a difficult spot, and that is no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

Your M4 is the one which counts now, and lies under 50 miles from Brecon. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart it to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

A bit about Brecon

Brecon is a town situated on the River Usk in Powys, Wales, with a population of around 7021 people. Brecon sits at an elevation of 143 metres, surrounded by rolling hills and mountains. Brecon has a mix of housing types, but predominantly features terraced homes, and is close to nearby places such as Pendre and Uplands. Brecon is located near the Brecon Beacons National Park, and is a popular base for outdoor activities.

When our technicians get to you in Brecon: what we do

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Out comes the tainted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what started the trouble, and so the lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Brecon AdBlue removal is a separate matter

Don't start it: that first step holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Brecon page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Brecon?

We can't put one price on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Brecon motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Brecon?

A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Keep the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
