Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bridgend? Don't Start It

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Bridgend or the rest of West Lothian, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us before everything else starts, and you will learn what comes from there.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Turning the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
  • Do not put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to deal with, and we would rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Auldhill Avenue, put your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Keep your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning EH49 6 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, plus if the car has fired — these three facts shape your whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, sat at Linlithgow since this morning? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the drive in that sucked weakened diesel through the pump. Call us before you collect it.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Sainsbury's now. Time gone by is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of the local primary school. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a run taken in a rush demands a great deal of that.

Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the usual Bridgend & District Golf Club call — a diesel Peugeot 3008, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it escapes past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was engineered about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra parked by Ochiltree Castle barely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Bridgend

Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

The job begins at the pump, typically. Often enough the work wraps up on site as well. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Esso that is generally where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the only setting it gets spotted before the engine has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the offer. Starting the car just to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Bridgend and the areas beside it

Being a village, Bridgend has a regular visit, and the places close by go along on that same trip: Philpstoun and Threemiletown, Kingscavil and Wester Orchiltree, Old Philpstoun.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most locations around West Lothian have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Guessing is the thing to resist, especially on the boundary or anywhere your satnav fails. Phone and enquire.

See our map for the patch covered here. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our engineers cover, and none of it asks your vehicle to move to us.

Stopped by the kerb anywhere in Bridgend?

Not everybody finds a suitable place to pull over. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge on Auldhill Cottages, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Remain beside the vehicle when it is sensible to sit in it, but clear of it if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll bring our van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 3 miles out of Bridgend, the M9 is what matters here. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first junction that is safe, stop there, and never restart it to reposition. It changes what we bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

A bit about Bridgend

Bridgend is a small village in West Lothian, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 97 metres, with views of the surrounding countryside. Bridgend lies near the towns of Philpstoun, Threemiletown, and Kingscavil, and is approximately 7.9 miles from Dunfermline. Bridgend has a population of around 750 people, predominantly living in flat-type housing. Bridgend is located in a scenic area, with the city of Dunfermline and its amenities within easy reach.

When we get to you in Bridgend: what we do

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled out of the tank.
  • What is left in the system should not be what caused the trouble, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Once it's fired up, our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Bridgend?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — don't start the car — yet the fault isn't. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Bridgend has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Bridgend pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is set out below, as this job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Bridgend drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Bridgend?

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work gets done. Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and the car, still together?

Keep it shut off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume.
