Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brillwater?

Never fire up your engine. While the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Brillwater and the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Call us before anything else begins, and you'll learn what follows next.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the car. And once started, do not believe it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of your tank then into just those components.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would sooner come to a tricky location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Trebarvah Road, put the hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you phone, have your location. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting TR11 5 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, roughly how many litres, and if your car has been turned over. The answers shape everything that comes after.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Plenty of the work starts at the pump, meaning a fair chunk of it gets done on site. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Gulf? Given the station's consent, that's a place our engineers work, and routinely.

The forecourt is the only setting it gets spotted before the motor has started. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the car stands.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the offer. Firing the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Brillwater

Every start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of your tank and towards your pump — which is why a vehicle shuffled twice into a better space has quietly grown into a bigger job than one left precisely where it stopped. So when our technicians cannot work next to the diesel Renault Megane, our engineers move the car without firing it. None of that is fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Argal Farm Shop our engineers visit regularly, and the fuel is rarely the complicated part: the bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance deciding whether our van gets to you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.

Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt entirely normal on the way back from Constantine Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Risk the trip home from Cornish Arms? No. It will start and it will drive off just fine, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank runs typically while wearing down the components the fuel should be protecting. Park the Peugeot 308 and ring us.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is before the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off onward with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Mercedes E-Class by St Constantine.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Audi A3 by Constantine Museum and Archive. You'll not know how full your tank was. Scarcely anyone does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot regardless. Our technicians ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Parts our team serve in Brillwater

Brillwater is a residential suburb, so our vans are out to it and to the places near it on the same rounds: Constantine, Brill, Ponjeravah, Comfort and Polwheveral.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations across Cornwall, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours. Call us to ask rather than presuming — county lines especially, and wherever the satnav tends to struggle with.

The map shows the ground this page spans. The lot is territory our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move the car anywhere.

Broken down at the kerbside around Brillwater

Not everybody has the opportunity to stop somewhere sensible. Set off, then noticed? Finished up along the verge beside Trebarvah Close, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Fine right there? Remain by it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van coming to a difficult spot is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

over 50 miles out of Brillwater, your M5 is what matters here. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are typically a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

Where's Brillwater?

Brillwater is a small suburban area in Cornwall, situated near the north coast of the South West region. Brillwater sits at an elevation of 91 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside and close to nearby places such as Constantine and Brill. Brillwater is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Brillwater is located approximately 11 miles from Truro, the nearest city, and about 240 miles from London.

The job in Brillwater, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away flows the polluted mixture.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the problem, so the lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is fired up and tested to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Brillwater?

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Brillwater page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Brillwater

One number would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank can hold.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Brillwater

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Brillwater?

A good part of this work takes place there, so yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Leave the car turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
