The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broad Oak
Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Pause; leave it off. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your car has stopped — and no other factor decides that more than these next few minutes do. What follows is the sequence from this point, anywhere around Broad Oak you are.
Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute
Work through these in sequence, before you do anything else.
- Keys out of your ignition. Turning the ignition on can be enough to prime the fuel system, and priming pulls petrol out of your tank towards the parts it damages. Leave the vehicle off completely.
- A bigger tank of the same mix is all adding diesel gives you, because it removes nothing. So no extra diesel.
- Being seen comes before the rest beside moving traffic: switch the hazard lights on, and only then deal with everything else.
- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the staff to help you push the car away from the petrol pump. Don't fire it up to move it, however short the way.
- Hold on to your receipt. It says which fuel got in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.
If you were still on the move when you realised, pull over somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M3, under 3 miles from Broad Oak, that means the next junction. Step one comes next.
The fork in every Broad Oak fuel drain: has it run yet?
Everything after this point rests on one answer.
If it has not once been started:
- The petrol remains in that tank, and just there.
- The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where the car is.
- No place is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.
Motor run, however briefly?
- The lines and the fuel filter now hold petrol pulled out of that tank.
- Run it farther and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having passed through the pump first.
- The farther it went, the bigger this job — the fuel lines, your filter, and now and then more besides.
The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing. Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.
Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Broad Oak: what we need
Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.
- The best place to start is a postcode — one beginning RG29 1 — for where you are.
- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Broad Oak Lane, or wherever you have pulled up.
- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, so mention the landmark — such as the one outside The Co-operative Food.
- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Broad Oak page.
- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — whichever gives us how much.
- Whether it has run. And if it has, how far plus how heavily.
- Whose car it is. Some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise this work, and that is easier settled before our technicians turn up than after.
Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — works as well.
Broad Oak fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So stick to these.
- Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere exposed? Get away from the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it is? Stay with it.
- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: nobody starts it.
- None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from the boot. So no additives.
- No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond your tank.
- Not for the radio, not for your windows: your ignition remains off.
Step by step: the fuel drain when our van arrives
- First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those answers set the job, and so our price follows them.
- That tank is drained. The tainted mix comes out of the tank.
- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank sits in the lines if it ran, and your lines are flushed to shift it.
- Cleared, or replaced if the vehicle has a serviceable one: your filter is sorted next.
- Bleeding the system comes once fresh diesel is in.
- The first start on clean diesel. Once bleeding is finished, your engine is started and our technicians confirm that it runs properly.
Until it runs on clean diesel, our engineers remain with it. If it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon, and the car goes back to normal driving right away.
After the fuel drain is done: driving around Broad Oak again
- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving is all.
- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over and call us back.
- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was carried out, and so hold on to your documents.
- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
