Petrol in Diesel

Brome: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Brome and the rest of Suffolk, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Call us so our technicians will explain what happens after that before you try much else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and don't rely on it if it fires up. Here is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just can't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and drives off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of your tank and into precisely those parts.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we would rather come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Rectory Road, put your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Before you call, get your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts IP23 8 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, approximately how much, and if the car has been started. Your replies decide whatever happens next.

Your high-pressure pump spent that morning run running on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So take a diesel Volkswagen Passat, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Diss till the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a lot, which is why the question we ask is about miles not time. Call us. Leave it exactly where it stands.

Diesel Peugeot 308. A couple of litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside Tesco. That's the enquiry we hope for, as the question underneath it's about quantity through your pump not hours on the clock.

You will be urged to move it out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags by St Peter and St Paul Church of England Primary School, Eye, a misfuelled Dacia Duster running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol past the fuel filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

Your Mercedes E-Class remains where it is in the car park by the pub in the village for the whole job, which generally runs like this. First our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since, because much of the work depends on those answers. The tank is emptied of the tainted blend, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and the system primed, the vehicle is fired up and tested, and once it is running smoothly you drive away.

Leave the BMW 5 Series close to Saint Mary, Brome then call us. We are blunt about not driving on since a worn-out pump sheds, and what it sheds travels downstream with your fuel to your injectors beyond it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Brome

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Most of the job starts at a forecourt, which means a big chunk of that is finished at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf Oil, that's normally where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

A forecourt is the one location this gets halted before the motor has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Take the help. Starting the car just to move four car lengths isn't.

Brome and the towns next to it

Brome is a rural village, so our team head out to it and to the villages around it on the same rounds: Stuston, Brome Street, Thrandeston, Eye and Waterloo.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Suffolk, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours. Contact us and ask rather than guessing — borders above all, and wherever your phone can get wrong.

This map shows the ground the page covers. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Stranded at the kerbside in Brome

Some drivers get no safe place to pull in at all. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Eye Road because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you sit by the car or step away from it hangs on if being in it seems wise. Don't restart your engine to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into the system. However awkward the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The M11 is the one that counts now, and lies under 50 miles from Brome. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

All about Brome

Brome is a small village in Suffolk, situated inland at an elevation of around 45 metres, with a mix of detached homes and rural landscapes. Brome lies near the villages of Stuston and Thrandeston, and is connected to the nearby town of Diss by Brome Street. Brome is approximately 20 miles from Norwich and around 79 miles from London, making it a rural community with some access to larger urban areas.

Once our technicians reach you in Brome: what follows

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tank gets drained of it.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught early, and because everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Brome?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not start the vehicle — but this fault isn't. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Brome has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Brome

What moves the figure is listed below, as this job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank takes.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Brome motorists

Fuel drains on a Brome petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this takes place. We attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable far more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
