Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bromley Wood?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Bromley Wood and the rest of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us before all else starts, so you'll know what happens next.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it — and never trust it if it starts. Here is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel normally just won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects your high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often enough to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.
  • Never water down it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we would rather come to a tricky location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Pinfold Lane, turn the hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning WS15 3 — that's what determines whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What got in, approximately how much, and whether the car has run — those three facts determine the whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Rugeley Trent Valley since breakfast? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the run in that sucked diluted diesel through your pump. Phone before you collect the car.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call our technicians hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Megane, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now shut off at Aldi.

Easy job, this one — until someone drives it home. A diesel BMW 3 Series parked outside the pub in the village with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the car and phone once it's light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings and into the engine oil.

Seldom the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from close to St Nicholas, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Audi A4 gets emptied, your filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the full circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not that tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — near Abbots Bromley Village Hall or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class telling you what is wrong.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A good share of this job is completed at a pump, because that is where it often kicks off. The drain usually happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets caught with your engine never started, and nowhere else manages it. Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Well worth it. Moving it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking the engine.

Coverage near Bromley Wood

Bromley Wood is a small village, and so our vans get out to it and to the areas near it on the usual trips: Radmore Wood, Abbots Bromley, Mill Green, Hoar Cross and Dunstal.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places around Staffordshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Contact us and enquire instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever the satnav tends to misread.

Use our map for the ground included here. Every bit of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the vehicle anywhere.

Broken down at the kerbside in Bromley Wood

The chance to stop somewhere suitable does not come to everybody. Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge of Ashbrook Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Safe right there? Sit beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Never restart it to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the fuel system. Our van coming to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Here is where the M6 Toll counts, under 15 miles from Bromley Wood. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

A little about Bromley Wood

Bromley Wood is a small locality in Staffordshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 114 metres. Bromley Wood lies near the city of Lichfield, approximately 9 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Radmore Wood and Abbots Bromley. Bromley Wood is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and a relatively small population of around 538 residents.

The job around Bromley Wood, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • The tank is cleared completely.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • Once it is started, our technicians check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bromley Wood

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — never fire it up — yet the fault is not. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Bromley Wood page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Bromley Wood

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Bromley Wood drivers

At a petrol station around Bromley Wood, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
