Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brookwood?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Brookwood or the remainder of Surrey, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us and we will explain what follows from here before you attempt anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Don't crank it — and do not rely on it when it does start. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It's not fine. It's wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would rather get to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Sheets Heath Lane, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Have your location ready before you call. A postcode that starts GU24 0 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, and whether the car has fired. Those three answers determine your whole call-out.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly kicks off, and where a large portion of that closes. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's consent, that's somewhere we work, and often.

At a forecourt, it is caught with the engine never run, and no place else does that. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where your car is.

Roll it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Rolling it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Brookwood

We'll come out to you, empty that tank, rinse the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan in Brookwood and you're stuck at Sainsbury's with a boot full of shopping, phone — and don't crank it again to exit the bay. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls very little of it, which is why these are usually the straightforward ones.

Easy job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 parked outside The Nag's Head Inn with petrol in your tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave it and phone once it's light. Expect a question about that drive there, though. Brief and chilly is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.

Out there normal, back flat. If that was the trip to Brookwood Recreation Ground, look at that tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

The narrower petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of sloppy. New spots see most of it for that reason. So: filled up close to Cross of Sacrifice without thinking, in a diesel Audi A3 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and distance decides how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the fuel filter, into your lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it near Stone of Remembrance needs its system flushed. Draining is not the same thing.

Areas our team serve in Brookwood

Those same rounds bring us to Sheets Heath, Pirbright, Bisley Camp, Knaphill and Bisley as well as Brookwood, which is a village.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns in Surrey have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Presuming is the mistake to skip, particularly on the border or anywhere your satnav fails. Call us to check.

Look at this map for the ground included on this page. All of that is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

Stuck on the roadside around Brookwood

The chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge of Elphinstone Close or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Out of the vehicle if it's not wise to sit there, beside it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However awkward the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 5 miles out of Brookwood, your M3 is what matters here. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never start it to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Brookwood itself

Brookwood is a village in Surrey, situated on the banks of the River Wey at an elevation of around 51 metres. Brookwood lies approximately 26 miles southwest of London, near the villages of Sheets Heath and Pirbright. Brookwood has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being predominant in the area. Brookwood is close to Bisley Camp, a well-known shooting range and training facility.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Brookwood

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • The polluted fuel comes from that tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • We pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Brookwood?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the problem beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Brookwood page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Brookwood?

What changes the price is set out below, because this job is not one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Brookwood

I am on a forecourt in Brookwood. Can you drain the car here?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. We work at Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is salvageable a lot more regularly than drivers expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with your car?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
