Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broom? Don't Start It

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Across Broom and the rest of Fife, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single call our way will be enough: we will show you what comes after this. Do it right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never crank it. Turned on all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car normally will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice implies — so do not add diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Park Avenue, anywhere — a difficult place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts KY8 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. The replies decide whatever follows.

Phone before you fetch it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and it at Leven ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any harm happened on the drive in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had weakened.

If you've put petrol in the diesel Skoda Octavia around Broom and you are now stranded outside Aldi with a boot full of shopping, phone. Do not fire it up a second time to leave that spot. We'll come out to you, clear your tank, purge your fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little diesel, so these are often the simple cases.

Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Audi A6 did on the way to King George V Park, it's doing none of that now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Ford Kuga left by Balmaise Centre barely two streets on. Call us, and leave the vehicle off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines instead of only emptying that tank.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than afterwards. Then call us about the Mercedes A-Class, the diesel one, near Millennium Mercat Cross. Don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a car, and it is something our engineers establish on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A fair portion of the job gets done at a pump, because that's where it often kicks off. Still at BP? Then that is usually where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

A filling station is the single place it gets halted before your engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Very much worth it. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Broom plus the villages beside it

Being a residential suburb, Broom gets a frequent call, while the places round about come along on the same round: Sillerhole and Scoonie, Leven and Leven Links, Innerleven.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in Fife, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours. Ring us to check rather than assuming — borders particularly, and wherever the satnav can misread.

The ground the page covers appears on the map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is ground we work on, and none of it requires your car to move to us.

Broken down at the kerbside around Broom

Some people find no suitable spot to pull in at all. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge of Linnwood Gardens, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Clear of the vehicle while it's not wise to sit there, with it if it is. Never restart the motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into your fuel system. We will take our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the M90 comes into it — under 15 miles away from Broom. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not start the car to reposition. Long run? Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in the van.

A bit about Broom

Broom is a coastal suburban area in Fife, situated near the towns of Leven and Scoonie, with Broom itself lying at an elevation of around 25 metres. Broom is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is located close to the shoreline, with Broom residents enjoying views out to sea. Broom is part of the larger network of communities around Dundee, Scotland's fourth-largest city, which is approximately 17 miles away.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you around Broom

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Away comes the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's fired up with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running smoothly.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Broom

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Broom page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Broom?

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Broom motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt in Broom. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Our technicians visit Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep the car off. It's fixable far more often than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Turned off is the way it remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining in Broom and across Fife — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
