Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broomhill? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Broomhill or the remainder of County Armagh, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. A single call our way is enough: our team can explain what happens after this. Try this straight away.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And having started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Heugh Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started motor.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting BT62 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, and also if the engine has run. These three answers settle the full job.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A large portion of this job gets done at the pump, as that is where it usually kicks off. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

A forecourt is the single location it can be caught before the motor has run. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The staff will usually offer to roll the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Broomhill

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside the local shops now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.

Twenty to nine. By the local primary school. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Switch the hazard lights on, leave the ignition alone, then ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of it.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle waits, as a diesel BMW 5 Series parked at the green space at the edge of the village is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

Three things help when you ring from close to the centre: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location we work, and so the location itself is hardly ever the problem — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Mercedes A-Class, change the filter where there's a usable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, since by this point the worst of that is resting in the fuel lines rather than in that tank.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle lumpy, and your diesel Vauxhall Insignia is parked up close to the far end of the built-up part. Your engine isn't packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours normally get driven again before somebody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and call us.

Broomhill plus the villages next to it

Kilmore, Derryhale, Richhill, Annahugh, Laurelvale — each of those on the rounds that carry us across to Broomhill itself, a small village.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most places across County Armagh, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. Call us and check instead of assuming, especially if you are on the border or anywhere the satnav misreads.

Use the map for the area shown here. The lot is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the vehicle anywhere.

Stuck on the roadside anywhere in Broomhill?

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge on South Crescent, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by your car or keep clear of it hangs on if staying in it looks sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However difficult the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has gone

Here is where the local M77 counts, over 50 miles out of Broomhill. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition. It alters what we bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Where is Broomhill?

Broomhill is a small locality in County Armagh, situated inland at an elevation of 42 metres, approximately 6 miles from the city of Armagh. Broomhill is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Broomhill sits within a network of small settlements, including nearby Kilmore, Derryhale, and Richhill.

What happens when we get to you in Broomhill

  • We establish what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • That tank is drained of it.
  • We flush the lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.
  • The system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • When it is fired up, we confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Broomhill AdBlue removal is a different matter

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — don't fire it up — yet the issue is not. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Broomhill page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Broomhill

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Broomhill

Fuel drains on a Broomhill petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. It's salvageable much more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
