Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Broughton Park? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Broughton Park and the rest of Greater Manchester. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Call us so our team can tell you what follows from here before you try any more.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And if started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we would sooner get to an odd place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Park Lane, switch those hazards on and leave it there.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning M7 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if your car has been turned over. Your answers decide all that follows.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A fair part of this work ends up completed at a forecourt, because that is where it mostly kicks off. We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Shell that is typically where this drain takes place.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the only setting the mistake gets caught. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines as well as your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where the car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Very much worth it. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Broughton Park

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at easy throttle uses hardly any fuel. Petrol into a diesel Peugeot 308 somewhere around Broughton Park, a boot full of shopping, and you stuck outside Kayes — phone us. Leaving that space isn't worth another start. The tank gets cleared where it sits, your fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and you drive away.

This is what a job in the car park by Woodthorpe Hotel usually looks like. We reach the car, ask what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since — those three answers settle much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is primed. Then our engineers start it, make sure it runs smoothly, and you drive away.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past gaps instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through — that is the full process. It accounts for the usual Clowes Park (Broughton Park) call too: a diesel Audi A3 that went out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

The pump sits upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a worn one loses travels on with the fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel BMW 5 Series where it's by Manchester Great New and Central Synagogue.

By this point your tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got close to Vine Street Shul needs your circuit purged, not emptied.

Do we serve your end of Broughton Park?

Being a residential suburb, Broughton Park gets a regular visit, and the places close by go along on that same run: Sedgley Park and Kersal Dale, Hilton Park and HIgher Broughton, Kersal.

There are pages for nearly all towns across Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing about whether we come. Ring us to enquire rather than assuming, especially where you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav misreads.

Use this map for the ground included here. All of it is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Roadside stops in Broughton Park

A chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge on Limefield Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the motor if it is not safe to be there, by it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the system with every mile covered. A technician driving to an awkward location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, and read this

Your M60 is the road that counts here, and it runs under 3 miles from Broughton Park. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. On a longer run — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Where is Broughton Park?

Broughton Park is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Irwell and close to the city of Manchester. Broughton Park has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and the area is home to around 9787 people. Broughton Park is located near several other suburban areas, including Sedgley Park and Kersal Dale. Broughton Park sits at an elevation of 83 metres, relatively low compared to other parts of the region.

Once our engineers arrive with you around Broughton Park: what we do

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
  • Your tank is cleared completely.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Our technicians turn it on and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Broughton Park AdBlue removal is a distinct job

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Broughton Park has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Broughton Park

What changes the price is set out below, since the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank can hold.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Broughton Park motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Broughton Park. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians work at Essar and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
