Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Brynmenyn?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Brynmenyn and the remainder of Bridgend. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Call us before everything else happens, so you will know what happens next.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start it — and do not rely on it if it fires up. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives off just fine for several miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Bryn Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult place suits us better than a started motor.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting CF32 9 — that's what settles whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has been turned over. Your responses settle all that happens next.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Pumps are where the work usually begins, and where a fair chunk of that finishes. Still at Texaco? Then that is typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one setting this gets spotted. Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

The staff will generally happily roll the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Brynmenyn

Car parks like the one outside Filco Foods are somewhere our engineers attend frequently, and your fuel is hardly ever the difficult part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height bar on the way in that settles whether our van can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is facing. If we can't work beside your diesel BMW 3 Series we'll move the car without starting it — and that's not fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mix out of your tank and on to the pump, and so a motor moved twice into a roomier bay has gradually turned into a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the entire process, and it accounts for the ordinary Coed Waunpiod call: a diesel Peugeot 208 that went out there without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. None of that is the engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Bryn Road Chapel. For a diesel Kia Sportage whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, and let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why your lines get cleaned and not just your tank drained.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then phone us about the Ford Fiesta near Ynysawdre Community Centre, and do not worry that you cannot say how full your tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and we work it out on the spot. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

Flushed, not cleared — that is what a diesel Volvo XC60 which got as far as Ynysawdre Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into the filter, your lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Service near Brynmenyn

As a village, Brynmenyn gets a steady call, whilst the areas round about come with it on the same run: Abergarw and Bryncethin, Bryncoch and Sarn, Cymdda.

There are dedicated pages for most locations across Bridgend, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Call us to enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your satnav may get wrong.

The patch this page spans is on our map. All of it is ground our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.

Brynmenyn: broken down where you stopped

Not everyone finds a suitable place to pull in. A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge on Pleasant View or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you remain with your car or stand clear of it hangs on whether being there seems safe. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. Pressing on does the car far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

This is where your M4 comes into it — under 3 miles from Brynmenyn. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

Where is Brynmenyn?

Brynmenyn is a small village situated on the riverside in Bridgend, with a population of around 678 people. Brynmenyn has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are the most predominant. Brynmenyn is located near several other villages, including Abergarw, Bryncethin, and Bryncoch, and is approximately 16 miles from Swansea. Brynmenyn sits at an elevation of 52 metres above sea level, in a scenic area near the Welsh coast.

Our visit in Brynmenyn, step by step

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • Our engineers clear the tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the issue, so the fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • We turn it on and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. We do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Brynmenyn AdBlue removal is a different problem

Do not start it: that opening instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits in its place.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Brynmenyn has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Brynmenyn?

One figure would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank can hold.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Brynmenyn motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Brynmenyn?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers visit Welcome Break and the other forecourts locally routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more commonly than motorists fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Never switch it back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
