Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Buckland

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Buckland and the remainder of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Phone so we can tell you what follows next before you do anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Do not start the car — and never believe it when it does start. That is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It is not fine. It is wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Haytor Drive? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An awkward place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you call, have your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning TQ12 4 — that's what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what went in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has been run. Those responses settle everything that follows.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would close to double the figure to no end. The Renault Megane can sit at Newton Abbot perfectly well. Phone from the platform if handier; standing over us while our engineers work is not necessary.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Volkswagen Passat around Buckland and you are now stranded outside Sainsbury's with a boot packed with shopping, phone. Don't start it a second time to leave that spot. We will come to you, drain your tank, clean those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls hardly any of it, which is why these are often the easy jobs.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the precision components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Audi A6 went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Wildwoods Copse went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off and ring us.

Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Citroen C4 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Teignbridge District Council HQ or anywhere else, and never start the vehicle to find a better spot.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and the diesel Kia Ceed is parked up close to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Your engine is not giving up — that softness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours normally get driven once more before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Buckland

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Most of the work begins at a pump, which means a fair part of that ends up done on site. If you're still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that is normally where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's consent.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the single location the mistake is spotted. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines along with your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Very much worth it. Rolling it four spaces doesn't warrant starting it.

Do our technicians serve your side of Buckland?

Buckland is a residential suburb, and so we go out to it and to the villages near it on those same rounds: Penninn, Newtake, Aller Park, Milber and Netherton.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and the majority of towns around Devon have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Ring us to enquire rather than assuming.

This map marks the area this page includes. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers serve, and none of that asks your vehicle to move to us.

Stuck by the kerbside near Buckland

Some people find no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge of Windsor Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Stay with the vehicle when it's wise to wait there, but clear of it when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on does your car far more harm than a van driving out to an inconvenient place, and that's no trouble for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 15 miles from Buckland, the local M5 is what counts now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What we bring alters.

All about Buckland

Buckland is a suburban area in Devon, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 51 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Buckland lies near several other small settlements, including Penninn, Newtake, and Aller Park, and is approximately 13 miles from the city of Exeter. Buckland is part of the wider Exeter urban area, with the city being a major centre for employment and services. Buckland itself has a population of around 4021 residents.

What comes next when we arrive with you in Buckland

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled out of the tank.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running properly.

That leaves it ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Buckland

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas this issue under it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Buckland page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Buckland

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what varies it:

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank can hold.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Buckland

At a petrol station in Buckland, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians visit Tesco and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving moves the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the car?

Shut off is the way it stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Across Devon and in Buckland: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
