Bucknall: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Bucknall and the rest of Staffordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us so we can tell you what happens next before you do much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Never crank it — and never believe it when it fires up. Here is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off without complaint for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It's grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: turning it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Stevenson Road, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting ST2 8 — that is what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, plus whether your car has fired — these three replies shape the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Never drive it home. The commute has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would more or less double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that is quicker. Our technicians never need you standing over the car at Stoke-On-Trent while our technicians get it done, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

Diesel Renault Clio. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Asda. That's the phone call our technicians want, because the question under it is about volume through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

Somebody will urge you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. A misfuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Kingsland CofE Academy is a hassle; the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. Leave it, let them complain, and give us a call.

It will start. It will drive off just fine. That's the issue, since a diesel on a diluted tank behaves typically while wearing the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not chance the trip home from Trent Tavern — leave the Peugeot 308 and phone.

Rattling? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfilled Mercedes E-Class, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps close to St Mary, and leave the restarting alone.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Bucknall

On the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

It begins at a pump, usually. Often enough the job finishes on site too. We work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, and so if you are still at Esso that's typically where the drain gets done.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the only location the mistake is halted. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Take the assistance. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Bucknall plus the places next to it

As a residential suburb, Bucknall sees a steady visit, and the areas nearby go with it on that same trip: Townsend and Abbey Hulton, Northwood and Birches Head, Berry Hill.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns around Staffordshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours. Ring us and ask rather than guessing, above all when you are on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

Check our map for the area shown here. The car never needs to move to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Bucknall: stranded where you parked

The chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everybody. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Fellbrook Lane as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Remain beside the vehicle if it is wise to sit inside, and clear of the car when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll send the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the local M6 counts, under 5 miles from Bucknall. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible junction then switch off. It changes what we bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

All about Bucknall

Bucknall is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, sitting alongside the River Trent at an elevation of around 132 metres. Bucknall is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is situated near other local neighbourhoods such as Townsend and Abbey Hulton. Bucknall has a population of approximately 6192 residents and is close to the city centre of Stoke-on-Trent, being only 1.2 miles away. Bucknall is also part of the wider West Midlands region, with London being around 135 miles to the south.

What happens when our engineers get to you in Bucknall

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled out of your tank.
  • Our engineers rinse the lines and clear your filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. We do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Bucknall AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Bucknall page. Both are ours to deal with.

Bucknall prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One figure would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Bucknall drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Bucknall?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Gulf is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off. It is fixable much more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct problem. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect.
