Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Burnley Lane?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Burnley Lane and the remainder of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While your engine has not run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Our engineers can explain what your next step is. Call us — that goes ahead of anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't start it — and never rely on it when it fires up. This is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for several miles. It's not okay. It is eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Bracewell Street? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting BB10 1, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • What got in, about how much, and also whether your car has fired — the three answers shape the entire job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at a forecourt?

A fair part of the job ends up completed at the pump, since that's where it mostly starts. The drain typically happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's permission, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.

No place but the forecourt can it be spotted with the engine still unrun. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Burnley Lane

The enquiry our engineers want runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, some litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off outside Lidl. What we're truly asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Shift it out of the gateway and deal with it later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by Barden Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, since priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through your filter on to your pump. Let people moan. Phone us.

Park it there overnight. Ring us first thing. Nothing about a diesel BMW 3 Series standing in the car park outside Duke of York degrades while it waits, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The question our engineers come with is about the trip there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the engine oil.

Why we're firm about not driving on: the pump rests ahead of your injectors, so whatever a wearing pump sheds moves downstream with your fuel. Leave the Nissan Qashqai near St Cuthbert and phone us.

Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Ford Focus near Community Library and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Burnley Lane plus the villages beside it

Being a residential suburb, Burnley Lane gets a routine visit, whilst the places nearby go with it on the same round: Heasandford and Reedley, Stoneyholme and Harle Syke, Brierfield.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for most locations around Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours. Call us to ask rather than assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your phone tends to get wrong.

Use our map for the area covered here. Your car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Burnley Lane: broken down where you parked

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge on Sharp Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a routine call for us instead of a rare one.

Fine where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Do not restart the motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mix further into the system. We'll bring our van to an awkward place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is far better than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, and read this

Here is where the M65 comes in, under a mile out of Burnley Lane. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe exit, switch off, and never start the vehicle to move it. Long trip? Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.

What comes next when our engineers reach you around Burnley Lane

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The contaminated mixture is pulled out of the tank.
  • We clean your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

Burnley Lane AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

Never fire it up: that first step holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Burnley Lane has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Burnley Lane pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is set out below, as this job is not one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Burnley Lane motorists

Fuel drains on a Burnley Lane petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's permission we visit Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more regularly than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Don't switch the car back on.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
