Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Burnside?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Burnside and the rest of Tyne and Wear. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Phone and then our engineers shall tell you what comes after that before you attempt much else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: switching it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would rather get to an odd place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Newstead Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Get your position ready before you call. A postcode starting DH4 5 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, about how much, and whether your car has been started. Those answers determine whatever follows.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Plenty of the job starts at a pump, which means a good share of it gets completed at one. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at JET that's generally where this drain takes place.

No place other than a garage can the mistake be caught with the engine still unstarted. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and your lines together with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where your car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth it. Firing the car just to move four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Burnside

Car parks like the one outside Tesco are somewhere we work in all the time, and your fuel is rarely the complicated part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that determines if a van can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way your car is facing. If our technicians cannot work alongside the diesel Volkswagen Passat we'll roll the vehicle without firing it — and that's not pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and draws more of that mixture out of the tank and on to your pump, and so a car shunted twice into a nicer bay has silently become a bigger job than one left just where it stopped.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it won't run, so the motorist stops there and the wear stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be giving. That's the trap, and it's why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely normal coming back from Newbottle Primary Academy. They always do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about, so nothing warns you. Call us with roughly how far you travelled, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

Do not risk it. The trip home from The Beehive is perfectly possible, which is precisely the trouble — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts the fuel is meant to lubricate. Ring us, and let the Audi A4 stay where it sits.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it runs through — that's the entire mechanism. It accounts for the normal Russell Foster 7 Pitches call too: a diesel Dacia Duster that went out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — close to St. Matthew's Church & Community Hall or anywhere at all. Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a misfilled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what is wrong.

Coverage around Burnside

Those same journeys carry us to Sunniside, Grasswell, Sedgeletch, High Dubmire and Newbottle along with Burnside, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of places across Tyne and Wear, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us to check instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav might struggle with.

This map is the patch this page includes. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your car does not need to move to us.

Stuck on the kerb anywhere around Burnside?

Not everybody gets the chance to stop anywhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge of Blind Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Whether you stay by the motor or stand away from it rests on whether sitting nearby is wise. Do not restart it to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the system. We'll take our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 3 miles out of Burnside, the local A1(M) is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the first safe junction, turn off, and do not start the car to reposition. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

About Burnside

Burnside is a suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Burnside sits at an elevation of around 55 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Sunniside, Grasswell, and Sedgeletch. Burnside is situated near the city of Sunderland, which is approximately 5.3 miles away. Burnside has a population of around 3964 people, making it a small but established community.

What our technicians do when we get to you in Burnside

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • That tank is drained of everything.
  • Our technicians flush the lines and clear your filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our engineers start it and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Burnside?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — never crank it — but this fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.

AdBlue removal around Burnside has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We cover both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Burnside

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

Burnside drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Burnside?

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. We work at Tesco and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way. This is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
