Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Buxted?

With your tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Buxted and the remainder of East Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Phone before all else starts, and you will see what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That is why you never crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the point people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: switching it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so do not add diesel on top to thin it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts TN22 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has fired. Those three replies shape your whole visit.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, parked at the nearest station since first thing? The day has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the journey in that pulled thinned diesel through your pump. Phone us before you collect the car.

If you have put petrol in the diesel BMW 3 Series around Buxted and you are now sat outside Waitrose with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us. Never crank it again to get out of that spot. We will get to you, empty your tank, purge your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any diesel, so these are usually the simple cases.

Three things help when you call from close to Buxted Methodist Church: which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location we work, and so the place itself is seldom the trouble — we'd much rather deal with a cramped parking bay than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the Volkswagen Polo, change your filter where there is a usable one, flush the fuel lines then put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, because by this point the worst of that is sitting in the lines instead of in that tank.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost nobody knows how full your tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to authorise the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Ford Fiesta near St. Mary the Virgin.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle lumpy, and your diesel Vauxhall Insignia is parked up near St Margaret The Queen Buxted. The motor is not giving up — that softness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so vehicles like yours generally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Buxted

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

A fair share of the job gets completed at the pump, because that is where it often kicks off. If you are still at the forecourt at JET, that is usually where the drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

At a forecourt, the mistake is halted with the engine never run, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the car sits.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push the vehicle. Well worth it. Firing it just to shift four car lengths is not.

Service near Buxted

Buxted is a village, and our team head out to it and to the areas around it on the usual trips: Potters Green, Pound Green, Etchingwood, Five Ash Down and Ringles Cross.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns in East Sussex, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list tells you nothing at all about if our engineers come. Presuming is the habit to skip, especially on a border or somewhere your phone struggles. Ring us and enquire.

This map shows the ground this page covers. The vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We operate over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs in Buxted

Not everyone finds a decent place to stop. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge beside Gordon Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the motor when it isn't safe to sit there, with it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However difficult the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

under 15 miles out of Buxted, the local M23 is what counts now. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our technicians bring.

Buxted itself

Buxted is a village situated in the riverside setting of the River Uck in East Sussex, with Buxted being surrounded by nearby places such as Potters Green, Pound Green, and Etchingwood. Buxted sits at an elevation of approximately 65 metres, and Buxted is located near the city of Brighton and Hove, which is about 16.7 miles away. Buxted has a population of around 1395 people, with Buxted being characterised by predominantly detached housing.

The call-out around Buxted, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
  • Out comes the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • It is started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to set off. There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Buxted is a separate job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the problem beneath it is a separate one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

AdBlue removal in Buxted has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Buxted?

What changes the figure is set out below, since the job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Buxted drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt in Buxted. Can you drain the car here?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We attend Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then keep it off. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Standing next to it?

Do not turn the car back on.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
