Petrol in Diesel

Cae-gors: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Cae-gors and the rest of Carmarthenshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One ring to us will be enough: we will tell you what follows from here. Make this straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Turning the ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
  • Never water down it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hendre Park, anywhere — a tricky spot for us beats a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning SA14 8, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
  • What went in, roughly how much, plus if the car has fired — the three facts shape the full call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

On the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Much of the job starts at the pump, meaning a fair portion of that gets done on site. The drain typically takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's consent, that is somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, this gets spotted with the engine never started, and no place else manages that. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cae-gors

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at easy throttle uses hardly any diesel. Petrol into a diesel Ford Focus somewhere in Cae-gors, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stuck at The Food Warehouse — phone. Leaving the bay isn't worth a restart. That tank gets drained where it sits, the lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and you drive home.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle generally will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, since behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

You head off at the end, once we have fired it up and confirmed it runs correctly on new diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park by Castle Arms Llangennech, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get cleaned and the filter comes off where your Mercedes E-Class has a replaceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our engineers get to your car: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Out there normal, back gutless. If that was the trip to Brynhyfryd Park, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Audi A3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, phone us.

By now the tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 2008 that got close to Llangennech Community Hall needs its circuit cleared. Clearing is not the same thing.

Areas our vans cover in Cae-gors

These same rounds bring us to Brynhyfryd, Llangennech, Allt, Bryn and Talyclun besides Cae-gors, which is a coastal area.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and most places around Carmarthenshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Phone and enquire instead of presuming, especially where you are on a boundary or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

The area the page covers sits on our map. Your car does not need to move to us. We work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down at the roadside in Cae-gors

Some people have no safe spot to stop whatsoever. A common call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Maes yr Efail or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Sit beside the vehicle while it is safe to sit in it, and clear of the car when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The M4 is the one that counts here, and lies under 3 miles from Cae-gors. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition. It alters what we bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Cae-gors itself

Cae-gors is a coastal locality in Carmarthenshire, situated near the city of Swansea and overlooking the Bristol Channel. Cae-gors has a relatively low elevation of 18 metres, and its detached housing stock reflects its appeal as a residential area. Cae-gors is close to nearby places such as Brynhyfryd, Llangennech, and Allt, and is within commuting distance of Swansea.

Once we arrive with you in Cae-gors: what we do

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • The tank is drained of everything.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Your engine is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cae-gors

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this problem underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Cae-gors page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Cae-gors

What changes the figure is laid out below, because this job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Cae-gors drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Cae-gors petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more often than drivers fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Do not switch the car back on.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
