Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Caer-graig

Don't fire up the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, all over Caer-graig and the remainder of Swansea, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Phone and we will tell you what follows after that before you attempt much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't fire it up — and do not believe it when it fires up. That is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and moves off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It is eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: flicking it on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a car that hasn't moved. On the verge on Clos Coffa, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts SA6 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • What was put in, about how many litres, and whether the car has fired — the three facts decide the full call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Frequently the job ends there as well. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent, so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that's usually where the drain takes place.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets halted with your motor never started, and no place else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key.

Push the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking the car for four car lengths? No.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Caer-graig

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are actually asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our engineers like runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now switched off at Spar.

You set off at the end, once we have started the engine and checked it runs correctly on fresh diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park by Hebron Inn, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. It all begins with three questions when we get to the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Graig-felen Plantation in that diesel Audi A4 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Three things help when you ring from close to Canolfan Adnoddau Cymunedol Forge Fach: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our engineers work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the problem — we would far rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain the Dacia Duster, change your filter where there's a usable one, flush the lines then put fresh fuel through the whole system, since by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines rather than in that tank.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our engineers flush it, and take your filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Vauxhall Astra near Bethel Evangelical Church and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the motor pulls the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

Coverage around Caer-graig

Aber-Clydach, Graigfelen, Cae-mawr, Mount Pleasant, Clydach — all of them on our journeys that take us out to Caer-graig itself, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. Those places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most places in Swansea, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us and check instead of presuming, above all where you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

See this map for the ground shown on this page. The vehicle never needs to move to us. Our technicians work across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded by the kerb anywhere in Caer-graig?

The chance to pull in somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody. A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Yew Tree Gardens or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Sit by the motor while it is sensible to wait there, and out of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward place, and that's no trouble for us.

Driven it already? Stop, then see this

The local M4 is the one which matters here, and it runs under 3 miles from Caer-graig. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in the van.

A bit about Caer-graig

Caer-graig is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Swansea, with an elevation of 42 metres above sea level. Caer-graig is located approximately 5.4 miles from Swansea city centre and is near other local places such as Aber-Clydach and Graigfelen. Caer-graig has a population of around 3390 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Caer-graig is part of the wider Swansea urban area, which is around 162.5 miles from London.

The visit around Caer-graig, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • After it's started, we confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Caer-graig

Don't crank it: that opening step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Caer-graig page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Caer-graig

One price would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Caer-graig drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Caer-graig, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's permission our technicians work at Asda and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable far more often than people expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Don't switch your engine on again.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
