Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cairnie?

If you have not started the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has stopped in Cairnie or the remainder of Angus, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us before everything else begins, and you will see what comes after that.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it — and do not depend on it when it fires up. That is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often sufficient to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Never thin it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on St Vigeans Road, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting DD11 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
  • Three answers determine the entire job: the fuel you put in, the rough volume involved, and if it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

How many miles you went is what our technicians query, not how long your motor has been sitting — and here is why. Diesel has two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it protects its high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a hurried fill-up on the drive in, the penny dropping close to eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf standing at Arbroath since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were done with your pump running on a liquid robbed of a lot of its protection. Phone then keep the vehicle exactly where it is.

Each start primes your fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of that tank and on to the pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a roomier space has quietly turned into a harder job than one left just where it stopped. So if our engineers cannot work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series, we shift it without running it. None of that is fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Touch of Poland our engineers attend all the time, and the fuel is seldom the difficult part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance settling if our van reaches you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a frantic morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in your Peugeot 308 feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Ogilvy Park, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Audi A3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, call us.

Leave the Ford Kuga by Knox's Church and ring us. We're direct about not driving on as a worn pump loses, and what it loses travels downstream with your fuel to the fuel injectors beyond it.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

Most of this work begins at the pump, which means a fair portion of it gets finished there. The drain generally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's permission, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the one place the mistake gets halted. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car is.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Starting the car for four car lengths? No.

Parts our vans cover around Cairnie

Being a residential suburb, Cairnie gets a regular visit, whilst its neighbours close by go along on that same run: Demondale and Arbroath, Warddykes and Hayshead, Kirkton.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places in Angus, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. On the boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Call us and check rather than assuming.

The map shows the patch the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs your car to travel to us.

Kerbside breakdowns in Cairnie

The chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge on Cairnie Loan, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the vehicle if it isn't sensible to sit in it, beside it when it is. Don't restart it to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. However awkward the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, then check below

The M90 is the one that matters now, and it sits under 50 miles from Cairnie. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

A bit about Cairnie

Cairnie is a coastal suburban area in Angus, situated near the town of Arbroath and approximately 16 miles from Dundee. Cairnie sits at a relatively low elevation of 29 metres, with its flat housing stock reflecting the local topography. Cairnie is part of a larger residential area that includes nearby Demondale and Warddykes.

What our engineers do when we get to you around Cairnie

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • The contaminated fuel comes from that tank.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the trouble, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • We start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Cairnie AdBlue removal is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the problem beneath it is a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Cairnie page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Cairnie?

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel questions from Cairnie motorists

Fuel drains on a Cairnie petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more often than drivers assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Don't turn the car back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let it stay that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Cairnie and across Angus.
