Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cam

Pause, and keep your motor off — not on, and not for a moment to shift the vehicle. Emptied and purged, just where it is: that is generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes ahead more than on everything else. What follows is the sequence from this point, anywhere in Cam you are.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

In this order, all before everything else:

  • Keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime your fuel system, while priming draws petrol out of your tank toward the parts it damages. Leave it off completely.
  • Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the problem. It does not: nothing comes out, and your tank simply carries more of the same.
  • Get your car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there's traffic going past anywhere close to you.
  • However short the distance, starting it to move it is the thing to avoid. At a forecourt, roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to lend a hand.
  • Hold on to your receipt. It shows which fuel was put in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M5, under a mile from Cam, and stop somewhere sensible — not at the services farther on. Step one starts after that.

Has it run yet? The fork in each Cam fuel drain

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

Motor never run at all?

  • The petrol sits in that tank, and just there.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of that.
  • Step one matters for precisely this reason: it is the best position to be in.

Engine run, even for a moment?

  • The lines and the filter now carry petrol pulled out of your tank.
  • Run it farther and the petrol gets to the injectors, having passed through your fuel pump first.
  • The farther it went, the bigger this job — the fuel lines, your filter, and now and then more besides.

The line falls there since diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. In your tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. Once it's pumped, petrol begins wearing whatever moves it.

Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Cam: what our technicians need

Whether the technician goes round or finds you depends on a little planning.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning GL11 5 works best.
  • A road name is a help: Woodfield Road, say, or whatever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: say the one at Tesco, and it's simple.
  • That it's a diesel, plus the make and model of the car.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Cam, and so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever gives us how much.
  • The mileage it did, and how hard, if it has run at all.
  • Whose vehicle it is. Some hire and company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that is quicker settled before our engineers arrive than after.

Phone 0333 366 0103 once you have got that together — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

Waiting for a fuel drain around Cam: what to do

The wait is where well-intended help does the damage. Hold to these.

  • Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the car.
  • A helpful passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.
  • None of that gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.
  • Draining it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank stays where it is all the same.
  • Ignition stays off. Even for your radio or your windows.

Step by step: your fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: the answers decide the job, and that is why you get a quote after them rather than before.
  • Out of that tank comes the tainted blend: the tank is drained.
  • Flushing your lines comes next, since a vehicle that ran has petrol past that tank, inside your lines themselves.
  • Where your car has a serviceable filter, it's changed; if not, cleared.
  • Clean diesel in, and the system primed.
  • The start-up. With clean diesel in and the fuel system primed, it's fired up and tested to be sure it runs smoothly.

Only once it is running on new diesel do our technicians leave. It's very uncommon for a car caught quickly to be left with lasting damage, and normal driving starts again at once.

Back on the road around Cam after the fuel drain

  • After it has been started on clean fuel, there's nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • Pull over and call us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • Keep the documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Next time, go by the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
