Cambridge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Cambridge and the remainder of West Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the engine has not run and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Just one call our way will be sufficient: our team shall tell you what follows next. Try this straight away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start it. Turned on regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that backwards. It's not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Leeds Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts LS21 1, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you dial.
  • What got in, about how much, and whether the car has run — those three answers decide the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf left outside Guiseley this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked weakened diesel through the pump was the journey in. Phone us before you go to fetch it.

We're in car parks like the one outside Sainsbury's all the time, and it is rarely your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height limit at the way in, which settles whether our van gets to you at all. So mention how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If there is no room to work next to the Audi A4, our technicians roll it without your engine. That's not fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of that tank on to the pump, and a motor shuffled twice for a nicer space is gradually a bigger job than one no one touched.

Don't chance it. The journey home from The Junction Inn is perfectly possible, which is precisely the trouble — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Call us, and let the Ford Kuga stay where it is.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it stands. Whatever the diesel BMW X1 did on the way to Old Otley Tip, it's doing none of it now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Someone confident will tell you to drain the vehicle then put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C4 by Cross-Bedding and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is suck it back through your pump once more. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Phone us. Your system gets purged, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired motor from one that simply starts.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cambridge

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this job begins at a pump, meaning a large part of it ends up finished there. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Tate Oil? Given the owner's consent, that is a place our technicians work, and often.

At a garage, this is caught with your motor never run, and no place else does it. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines along with your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where the car sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the offer. Firing it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Coverage near Cambridge

Otley, Knotford, Newall, West Carlton, East Carlton — all of those on the runs that carry us out to Cambridge as well, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most locations around West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Presuming is the thing to avoid, especially on a border or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us and enquire.

This map shows the patch this page covers. The lot is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns across Cambridge

Some people find no sensible spot to pull in at all. Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge beside Lisker Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Fine right there? Stay by it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. We'll send our van to a difficult location without any bother, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where your Inner Ring Road comes into it — under 10 miles from Cambridge. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and don't start the car to move it. It alters what we bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Cambridge itself

Cambridge is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 67 metres. Cambridge is located near the cities of Bradford and Leeds, and is close to the towns of Otley and Newall. Cambridge has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of terraced houses. Cambridge is around 8 miles from Bradford and 177 miles from London.

The job around Cambridge, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Away goes the polluted mixture.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • We turn it on and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Cambridge AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Cambridge has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Cambridge

What moves the price is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. If it's not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Cambridge drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Cambridge petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Chevin Service Station is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more frequently than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
