Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Canada?
If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Canada or the rest of Durham, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. One call our way will be plenty: our engineers will explain what happens after this. Do that right away.
What to do now about petrol in a diesel
- Don't fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally can't run, so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. People get that reversed. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.
- Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would sooner travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on North Burns, put your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
- Get your whereabouts prepared before you ring. A postcode starting DH3 3 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
- Three details settle the full call-out: the fuel you poured in, the rough measure of it, and whether anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Quarter past eight, a rushed fill on the way in, and you realise at about eleven — by which time your diesel Renault Megane has been parked at Chester-Le-Street for three hours. Phone us then keep it exactly where it is. The drive in is the bit that matters here, as diesel does two tasks on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were travelled with your pump running on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question we ask is how many miles you went, not how long the car has been parked.
A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive asks for plenty — so three miles in the BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of Cestria Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, call us.
Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Chester-Le-Street Cricket Club, it's doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive it home to buy yourself any.
Why we are direct about not driving on: the pump sits ahead of the injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump gives off travels downstream with your fuel. Leave the Mercedes C-Class near Cornerstones and phone us.
By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in your filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Skoda Superb that got near Chester-le-Street Spiritualist Centre needs your system cleared, not drained.
On a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel
Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a big share of that closes. Still at BP? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.
Nowhere else but a forecourt can it be caught with the engine still cold. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and we put it right where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.
Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling it four spaces doesn't merit starting the motor.
Can our engineers cover your corner of Canada?
As a residential suburb, Canada sees a regular visit, while the places nearby come with it on that same journey: Chester-le-Street and Bridge End, South Pelaw and Whitehill, Pelton Fell.
There are separate pages for the majority of towns across Durham, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing about whether our technicians come. Contact us to ask instead of presuming, above all when you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav misreads.
Look at this map for the ground covered on this page. Your car never needs to come to us. We work across every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs in Canada
The chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge of Lucy Street, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.
Fine there? Wait by it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward spot, and that's no problem for us.
Run it already? Stop, and check this
Your A1(M) is the one which matters now, and runs under a mile from Canada. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what our engineers bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.
Canada itself
Canada is a suburban area situated on the riverside in County Durham, with a relatively low elevation of 12 metres. Canada lies near the city of Durham, approximately 5.6 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Chester-le-Street and Bridge End. Canada has a population of around 4973 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.
The call-out around Canada, step by step
- The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
- We clear the tank of all the contaminated mixture.
- Our technicians purge your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in your system isn't what created the problem.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
- The engine is fired up and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.
A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Canada
Don't start it: that opening step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Canada page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Canada?
One figure would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Petrol in diesel: common questions in Canada
At a petrol station in Canada, can you do a fuel drain there?
Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It's not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There is no need to take it to a main dealer, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.
You, and the car, still together?
That engine stays off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers fear.
