Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Canklow

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave the vehicle off. Emptied then flushed, just where it sits: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that straightforward depends on the minutes to come far more than on anything else. Here is the order of things from here, wherever you're around Canklow.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

First, these — in this sequence.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank into the components it harms.
  • A bigger tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel gives you, because it takes out nothing. So no extra diesel.
  • Hazards on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle simple to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push it away from the petrol pump. Don't crank it to shift it, however short the way.
  • Keep your receipt: the grade and the rough amount are written on it, and they're what we ask for first.

On the M1, under 3 miles from Canklow, the next exit is the spot to leave it; anywhere, the first safe place to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Every Canklow fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

If your motor hasn't run at all:

  • No place but that tank: that's where that petrol still is.
  • The job is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where the car stands.
  • No position is better, and it's why the first step matters so much.

If the motor has been run, even briefly:

  • Petrol has been pulled from that tank, through the filter then into your lines.
  • Run it farther and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having passed through your pump first.
  • Flushing the lines, the fuel filter sorted, occasionally more: the job expands as the mileage does.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. In that tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Canklow: what to have prepared

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning S60 2 works best.
  • A road name is a help: Canklow Hill Road, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Tesco Express, for instance — and it's much easier to find.
  • Say what the vehicle is — make, model — and check it's diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Canklow page.
  • The quantity: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.
  • Has it run? If so, say how far it went, and how it was driven.
  • The owner may have to approve this work under some hire and company agreements — so it is faster to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

Canklow fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Stick to these: well-intended help causes the damage during the wait.

  • Stay with your car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • Anything from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is risky — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not drain the car yourself.
  • The ignition stays off. Even for the radio or your windows.

When the van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • The price comes after three queries, not before them — what got in, how much, and if it has run — because the answers shape the job.
  • Then the tank is emptied, and the contaminated fuel comes out.
  • Your lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond the tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.
  • Then your filter: changed where there is a usable one, cleared where there's not.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.
  • Starting it. When the fuel system is bled with clean diesel, our technicians start the car and check it runs correctly.

Until it runs on fresh diesel, our engineers stay with it. Your car returns to normal use right away, and permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly.

Once your fuel drain is done: driving around Canklow again

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — normal driving is all.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.
  • The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
