Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cardrona Village

Never fire up your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Cardrona Village and the remainder of Scottish Borders, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. We will show you what your next move will be. Phone — that comes ahead of anything else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and don't depend on it if it does start. This is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just won't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and drives away quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It's eating into that fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice implies — so don't put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and our team would much rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Green Lane, put your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Our van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning EH45 9, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Three facts determine your whole visit: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at a pump, which means a fair portion of it is completed there. Still at BP? Then that's typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

At a garage, it gets halted with the engine never fired, and no place else does that. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Well worth it. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cardrona Village

Do our engineers serve your end of Cardrona Village?

Cardrona, Nether Horsburgh, Laverlaw, Glentress, Howford — all of these on the rounds that carry us out to Cardrona Village itself, a village.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all towns around Scottish Borders have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Close to a boundary, or somewhere your satnav struggles with? Phone and ask instead of assuming.

The ground this page includes appears on our map. The lot is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and usually it won't run, so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car fires up, ticks over and moves off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be supplying. That's the snag, and it's why the diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly usual coming back from the local primary school. They do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about, so nothing tells you. Phone with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle waits, because a diesel Mercedes E-Class parked at The Green is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Why we are blunt about not driving on: your pump sits upstream of the injectors, so whatever a wearing pump loses travels onward with your fuel. Leave the Audi A6 close to Cardrona Village Hall and call us.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than later. Then call us about the Vauxhall Insignia, the diesel one, near Cardrona Standing Stone. Don't worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — almost nobody can two days into a motor, and it's something our engineers check on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned lumpy, and the diesel Volvo XC60 is now waiting close to Castle Knowe. That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly instead of the motor failing — and as there is no warning for it, motors in that position typically get driven again before somebody calls. Please don't. Turn it off and ring us.

Stranded at the kerbside around Cardrona Village

Not everyone gets a safe place to pull over. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge beside The Green, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Fine there? Wait beside it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Never restart it to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into the fuel system. Carrying on does your car far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward spot, and that is no problem for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the local M8 comes in — under 25 miles away from Cardrona Village. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

Where's Cardrona Village?

Cardrona Village is a small riverside community in the Scottish Borders, situated near the River Tweed at an elevation of 159 metres. Cardrona Village has a mix of old and new housing, with detached homes being the predominant type, and is located close to nearby places such as Cardrona, Nether Horsburgh, and Laverlaw. Cardrona Village is approximately 22 miles from Edinburgh and 310 miles from London, making it a relatively rural but accessible location.

What happens when we reach you around Cardrona Village

  • The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • The polluted fuel is drawn from the tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that created the trouble.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. We do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Cardrona Village is a separate job

Don't fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Cardrona Village has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Cardrona Village prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Cardrona Village drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Cardrona Village?

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work takes place. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more commonly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists fear.
