Petrol in Diesel

Carlton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Carlton and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. One ring our way will be plenty: our technicians shall show you what comes next. Do this first.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and don't trust it if it fires up. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so never tip diesel on top to water down it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Pinfold Lane, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a car that never moved.
  • Get your location ready before you ring. A postcode starting DN14 9 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Three answers determine your whole call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate volume of it, and whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through the high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the way back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over that Skoda Octavia outside Snaith whilst the work gets done, and we would very much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Car parks like the one outside Londis are a spot our technicians visit often, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height limit on the way in that decides if a technician can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way your car is pointing. If our engineers can't work next to your diesel Peugeot 308 we will move the vehicle without starting it — and that isn't pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mix out of your tank and towards the pump, so a car shunted twice into a roomier spot has quietly grown into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in your Ford Focus feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by Carlton Primary School, running late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

Why so blunt about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is upstream of your injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it loses on with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Kia Sportage close to Carlton War Memorial.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later. Then ring us about the Volkswagen Touran, the diesel one, close to Saint Mary's Catholic Church. Do not worry that you can't say how full that tank was — almost no one can two days into a vehicle, and it is something our engineers establish there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

It starts at a forecourt, usually. Often enough the job finishes at one as well. If you are still at the forecourt at Carlton Service Station, that's typically where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the only location the mistake is spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the help. Cranking it to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Carlton and the towns beside it

As a rural village, Carlton has a regular visit, and its neighbours close by come with it on the same trip: Camblesforth and Snaith, West Cowick and East Cowick, Drax.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of places around North Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Phone to ask instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever the satnav may misread.

The map is the ground this page spans. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Carlton: stuck where you pulled up

Not everyone gets a safe place to stop. Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge beside Station Road, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the vehicle when it is not wise to sit there, with it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a technician heading out to a tricky spot, and that's no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

Here is where your M62 comes in, under 3 miles out of Carlton. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and never restart the vehicle to move it. Long run? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

Where is Carlton?

Carlton is a village in North Yorkshire, situated near the towns of Snaith and Camblesforth, with Doncaster approximately 14 miles to the south. Carlton sits in a low-lying area at an elevation of around 9 metres, close to the rural landscapes of the Yorkshire countryside. Carlton has a population of around 1741 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

What follows when our engineers get to you around Carlton

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel is pulled from the tank.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • The motor is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Carlton

Never crank it: that opening instruction stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Carlton page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Carlton

What moves the figure is set out below, as the job isn't one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank holds.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Carlton

At a petrol station in Carlton, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Gulf, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is your car still with you?

Don't switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers fear.
