Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Carnteel?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Carnteel and the remainder of County Tyrone. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Just one call to us will be plenty: our team can tell you what happens from here. Do this first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And once started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Heugh Road? Hazards on, and leave it there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started engine.
  • Get your location prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning BT69 6 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how much, and if your car has run. Those three facts shape the entire visit.

Quarter past eight, a hurried refuel on the road in, and the penny drops somewhere around eleven — by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been sitting at the nearest station for three hours. Phone then leave it right where it is. The trip in is the part that matters here, since diesel has two tasks on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with your pump running on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how far you travelled, not how long your car has been standing.

Move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, since priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter on to the pump. Let them complain. Call us.

Fine on the way out, flat on the way back. If that's how that drive to the green space at the edge of the village went, your tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Kia Sportage went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

Three things help when you call from near the centre: which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot we work, and so the place itself is seldom the problem — we would much rather deal with a tight parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Mercedes GLC, change the filter where there's a workable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, because by this point the worst of it is sitting in the lines rather than in the tank.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, your lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Hyundai Tucson that made it near the far end of the built-up part needs your circuit flushed, not drained.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Much of the job begins at a forecourt, so a large portion of it is finished at one. If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's usually where the drain gets done — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can it be halted with your engine still unstarted. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the lines together with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where your car is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

The staff will generally help you push it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Parts our vans serve near Carnteel

These same runs bring us to Aughnacloy, Ballygawley, Eglish, Granville and Castlecaulfield besides Carnteel, which is a small village.

There are dedicated pages for most towns in County Tyrone, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing whatsoever about if we come. Ring us to check rather than guessing — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav might struggle with.

That map shows the patch the page covers. The lot is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns across Carnteel

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not come to everybody. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge on Chalet Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Sit with your car if it is wise to be in it, and out of the vehicle when it isn't. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However awkward the location, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, then see below

Here is where your M77 counts, over 50 miles from Carnteel. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

A little about Carnteel

Carnteel is a small locality in County Tyrone, situated inland at an elevation of 108 metres, approximately 12.6 miles from Armagh. Carnteel is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Carnteel is close to nearby places such as Aughnacloy, Ballygawley, and Eglish, and is home to around 586 residents.

Once our technicians get to you in Carnteel: what we do

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn out of the tank.
  • What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • Our engineers pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Carnteel?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the problem beneath it's a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

AdBlue removal around Carnteel has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We cover both.

Carnteel pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is listed below, as this job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Carnteel drivers

I am on a forecourt in Carnteel. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more often than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is your car still with you?

The engine remains off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off. Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
