Petrol in Diesel

Carr Bank: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Carr Bank and the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Call us and we can explain what comes after that before you attempt any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never start the car — and never believe it if it starts. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for several miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing out that fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it protects that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which moves that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes — so do not add diesel on top to thin it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Walmersley Old Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning BL9 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, and if the engine has been turned over. The replies decide everything that comes after.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Most of this job starts at a forecourt, which means a fair part of it ends up done at one. Still at Esso? Then that is typically where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

A filling station is the only place it can be halted before your motor has run. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

The staff will usually happily move the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Starting it to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Carr Bank

Do our engineers reach your part of Carr Bank?

Baldingstone, Bevis Green, Walmersley, Limefield, Nangreaves — all of them on our trips that take us out to Carr Bank too, a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most places around Greater Manchester, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Near a border, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone and ask rather than presuming.

Check this map for the patch covered here. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory we serve, and none of it needs your vehicle to travel to us.

Stopped on the kerbside anywhere in Carr Bank?

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Ribble Drive because you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Okay there? Sit beside it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no bother for us.

Straightforward job, this one — till someone drives it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting by Masons Arms with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the car then ring us once it's light. Expect a question about the trip there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the piston rings then into the oil.

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us. Fine on the way out to Walmersley Golf Club, sluggish on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Ford Focus drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Three things help when you ring from close to Christ Church: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot we work, and so the place itself is rarely the issue — we would much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the Mercedes C-Class, change your filter where there is a workable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the whole circuit, since by this point the worst of it is sitting in the lines rather than in your tank.

Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical instead of sloppy — practically no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up by Seedfield Methodist Church that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the fuel injectors.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got by St John with St Mark wants its system purged. Clearing isn't the same thing.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

The local M66 is the one which matters now, and it sits under a mile from Carr Bank. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. It alters what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Carr Bank itself

Carr Bank is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Irwell and close to the cities of Salford and Manchester. Carr Bank sits at an elevation of around 150 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Carr Bank is located near several other small communities, including Baldingstone, Bevis Green, and Walmersley, and is around 9.8 miles from Salford. Carr Bank has a population of approximately 2071 residents.

What we do when our engineers get to you in Carr Bank

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away goes the polluted mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the issue, and so the lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • Once it is started, our engineers check it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. We do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Carr Bank AdBlue removal is a separate matter

The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

AdBlue removal around Carr Bank has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. We handle both.

Carr Bank pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Carr Bank

I am on a forecourt around Carr Bank. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like EG On the Move is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

Leave the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers assume.
