Carrickaness: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Do not start your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet run, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Carrickaness and the remainder of County Armagh, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Just one ring to us is plenty: our engineers can show you what happens after this. Do it right away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do next
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And once started, don't rely on it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those components.
- Don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Heugh Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky place suits us better than a started motor.
- Get your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode beginning BT71 7 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.
- Three facts shape the entire call-out: the liquid you put in, the ballpark volume of it, plus whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
Much of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a big part of it is completed there. The drain normally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and often.
At a forecourt, the mistake is halted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does it. We can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key are what settle that.
The staff will usually offer to wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Rolling the car four spaces doesn't justify cranking the engine.
Service near Carrickaness
Carrickaness is a small village, so our technicians head out to it and to anywhere by it on those same trips: Benburb, Blackwatertown, Killylea, Eglish and Charlemont.
Our engineers still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations across County Armagh, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Close to a boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Ring us and enquire rather than assuming.
This map shows the ground the page covers. The vehicle does not need to come to us. Our technicians work over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, call us. Three miles in your Audi A4 feels like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a hurried morning dash needs plenty.
What we will ask is whether that drive there was brief and chilly, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and anything that doesn't burn can slip past the rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Dacia Duster sitting in the parking area by the pub in the village holding a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens as it waits, so park the vehicle there overnight and ring us in the morning.
Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Mercedes E-Class did on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, it is doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.
Turn off where you have stopped, and don't restart it to find somewhere better — near a street just off the centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Renault Captur telling you what's wrong.
Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: we flush it, and take your filter off where there is a working one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you will get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso close to the far end of the built-up part and it will start, which is exactly why the tip sounds reasonable. Then your engine draws the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.
Carrickaness: stuck wherever you stopped
Not everybody has a chance to pull over somewhere safe. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge on South Crescent, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.
Remain beside the car when it is sensible to wait inside, yet clear of the car if it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered. We will send the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that's a lot better than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
Your M77 is the road which matters now, and sits over 50 miles from Carrickaness. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first exit that's safe, pull up there, and never start the car to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

What comes next when we get to you around Carrickaness
- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
- The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
- What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
- The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
- The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
That leaves your car ready to set off. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.
Carrickaness AdBlue removal is a distinct matter
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never crank it — yet this issue isn't. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Carrickaness page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Carrickaness pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What changes the price is set out below, since the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.
- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.
Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.
Carrickaness motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
I'm on a forecourt around Carrickaness. Can you drain the car here?
Yes, and it's where a good part of this work takes place. Our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving moves the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It isn't a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.
Standing next to it?
Your engine stays off.
Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers assume.
