Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cash Feus?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Cash Feus and the remainder of Fife. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. A single ring our way is plenty: our technicians can explain what follows next. Make it first.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Do not crank it — and do not rely on it when it fires up. This is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives away quite happily for several miles. It's not fine. It is wearing your fuel system while you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
- Don't thin it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- We would rather travel to an awkward location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Kirk Wynd, that means hazards on then leave it.
- Before you dial, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts KY14 7 — that's what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
- Three details decide the full job: the fuel you put in, the approximate quantity of it, plus whether anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
Ring us before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and the car at Ladybank ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any wear happened on the journey in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.
Here is what a job in the car park at Strath Tavern normally looks like. We get to your car, ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three replies determine much of the work. Then the tainted blend comes out of your tank, your lines get cleaned, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our technicians fire it up, check it runs properly, and you drive away.
Out there fine, back gutless. If that was the run to Town Green, look at the tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel Ford Kuga covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, ring us.
Three things help when you ring from close to War Memorial: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our engineers work, and so the location itself is seldom the problem — we'd much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the Kia Sportage, change the filter where there is a workable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the full system, since by this point the worst of it is waiting in the fuel lines rather than in your tank.
Strange locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Filled up by Edenshead and Strathmiglo Parish Church without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 5008 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and mileage is what settles how much petrol reaches your injectors.
Removing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt
Plenty of this work begins at a pump, so a fair share of that is completed at one. We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, so if you're still at BP that is typically where this drain gets done.
Before your engine has run — a garage is the only place it is caught. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.
Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Never.
Cash Feus and the places beside it
Strathmiglo, Auchtermuchty, Dunshalt, Gateside, Falkland — all of these on the rounds that bring us over to Cash Feus itself, a residential suburb.
If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around Fife, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours. Close to a border, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Phone and enquire rather than assuming.
See this map for the patch shown here. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground we cover, and none of it requires the car to travel to us.
Stuck on the kerb anywhere in Cash Feus?
Some people have no sensible place to stop whatsoever. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge on Cash Feus or at a lay-by with the hazards going.
Fine right there? Remain by it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However difficult the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than carrying on.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
Here is where the M90 comes in — under 5 miles away from Cash Feus. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.
Cash Feus itself
Cash Feus is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Fife, with an elevation of 61 metres and a mix of semi-detached housing. Cash Feus lies near several small towns, including Strathmiglo, Auchtermuchty, and Dunshalt, and is approximately 10.6 miles from Perth. Cash Feus has a population of around 827 residents, making it a small but distinct community within the region. Cash Feus is also relatively distant from major cities like London, being around 353.3 miles away.
The visit in Cash Feus, step by step
- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- Our engineers empty the tank of all the tainted mixture.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
- The engine is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cash Feus is a separate problem
Do not start it: that opening step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits in its place.
We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Cash Feus has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.
Cash Feus pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Cash Feus drivers
At a petrol station around Cash Feus, can you do a fuel drain there?
Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different problem. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Shut off is how it remains.
Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
