Petrol in Diesel

Cefn Coch: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Cefn Coch or the remainder of Powys, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us and then our engineers can tell you what comes next before you do anything else.

What to try next about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Meillionydd, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you phone, work out your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts SY21 0 — that's what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, about how many litres, and if the car has been started. The responses settle all that comes after.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where the work often begins, and where a fair portion of that ends. We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, and so if you are still at Mobil that is usually where the drain takes place.

Nowhere other than a garage can it be spotted with your motor still untouched. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car is.

The attendants will normally offer to move the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing. Cranking it just to move four car lengths is not.

Parts our team cover near Cefn Coch

These same runs carry us to Llanllugan, Adfa, Pant, Dwyrhiw and Ystrad Uchaf besides Cefn Coch, which is a rural hamlet.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations around Powys, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us and ask instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever a satnav can misread.

The ground this page spans appears on this map. The vehicle does not need to come to us. We work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down at the kerbside near Cefn Coch

Not everybody has the chance to pull over anywhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge of Pont Ystrad, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Whether you wait by the car or keep away from it rests on if sitting there looks sensible. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. Pressing on does your car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

You set off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and confirmed it runs properly on clean diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park by Cefn Coch Inn, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get cleaned and the filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when we reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel seeps past the precision components that are meant to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel BMW 1 Series went, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that drive to Fron Green Large Plantation went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left your diesel Volvo XC60 up by Cwm Llanllugan Community Centre a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has arrived at the fuel filter and your pump — which is why we rinse the lines instead of only draining that tank.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a misfuelled diesel Dacia Sandero telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by St. Cynon or anywhere else, and do not start the car to find a better location.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the filter, into your lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Corsa that made it by Taliesin Sculpture wants its system cleared. Clearing is not the same thing.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where the M54 comes in, under 50 miles out of Cefn Coch. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit then turn off. Long run? Anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Cefn Coch

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • That tank gets emptied of it.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running smoothly.

At that point it is ready to set off. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cefn Coch is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the fault under it is a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Cefn Coch has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We handle both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Cefn Coch

What moves the figure is set out below, because this job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Cefn Coch drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Cefn Coch petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Don't turn the car back on.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
