Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cefn Glas

Do not turn on the motor. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not been started, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Cefn Glas and the remainder of Bridgend, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. One ring to us will be sufficient: our engineers shall show you what follows from here. Try it right away.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not fire it up. Started all the same? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car usually can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for a few miles. Most people get that reversed. It isn't okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which carries the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Byron Avenue? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An awkward place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning CF31 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and also whether the engine has run — these three facts shape the whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The work kicks off at the pump, generally. Regularly the work finishes on site too. If you're still at the forecourt at Murco, that is generally where this drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

Nowhere else other than a garage can this be stopped with your engine still unrun. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Wheel it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Moving it four bays doesn't merit firing the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cefn Glas

We are in car parks like the one outside Spar a lot, and it's almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height barrier at the way in, which decides if a van can reach you at all. So say how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there is no space to work next to that Volkswagen Passat, our technicians shift it without your engine. That's not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank toward the pump, and a motor moved twice for a nicer space is gradually a worse job than one nobody touched.

Here is the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the ordinary Frenhines Forest (area 1) call — a diesel Nissan Qashqai, out there without complaint and back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the motor was built around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Our engineers purge the lines instead of only clearing that tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to your filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked up by Westways Community Centre a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full the tank was in a car collected two days ago, and we work that out there. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that is far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Ford Fiesta near Y Castell Newydd.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is parked up close to Brewery Field. The engine isn't giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours normally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then ring us.

Cefn Glas and the towns beside it

As a residential suburb, Cefn Glas gets a frequent visit, while the areas nearby go along on the same run: Llangewydd Court and Brynhyfryd, Bryntirion and Ystrad Fawr, Newcastle.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places in Bridgend, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list says nothing at all about if our technicians come. Ring us to check rather than guessing — borders above all, and anywhere the satnav tends to struggle with.

The area the page spans appears on our map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory we work on, and none of it requires your vehicle to move to us.

Stuck on the kerbside in Cefn Glas

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible. A routine call for us rather than an odd one: realised after setting off, landed along the verge of Willesden Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Out of the vehicle if it's not wise to sit inside, by it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the spot, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M4 comes into it — under 3 miles from Cefn Glas. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

What our engineers do when we get to you around Cefn Glas

  • The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • The polluted fuel is drawn from that tank.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Once it is started, our engineers check it runs properly on new diesel.

That has it ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Cefn Glas AdBlue removal is a separate job

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Cefn Glas page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Cefn Glas?

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Cefn Glas drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Cefn Glas. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work takes place. Routinely, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
