Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cefn-hengoed?

Never turn on your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, across Cefn-hengoed and the remainder of Swansea, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. One call to us is plenty: our engineers will tell you what happens after this. Do that right away.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd rather drive to an odd location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Cefn Hengoed Road, turn the hazards on and leave it there.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts SA1 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, approximately how much, plus whether the motor has been turned over. Those responses determine everything that follows.

The drive back would more or less double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already forced a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your BMW 3 Series. So keep the vehicle where it stands. Call us from the platform if that is quicker — no one needs you standing over the car at Llansamlet while we get on, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at easy throttle draws hardly any of it. Petrol into a diesel Audi A4 somewhere around Cefn-hengoed, a boot packed with shopping, and you stranded at Lidl — phone us. Leaving that bay is never worth another start. That tank gets emptied where it waits, the fuel lines flushed, new diesel in, and you head home.

A passer-by will tell you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. A misfuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a nuisance; the same car restarted three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Each restart primes the lines and draws more petrol past the filter then into your pump. Leave it, let everyone moan, and give us a call.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Crymlyn Bog in that diesel Vauxhall Astra is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Somebody certain will tell you to drain the car and put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso by Morfa Shopping and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there is petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is suck it back through your pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Call us. The system gets flushed, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that only starts.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

The work starts at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly the work ends at one too. Still at Tesco? Then that's normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with the motor never fired, and nowhere else manages that. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key.

The attendants will generally happily move it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Cefn-hengoed plus the towns next to it

Cefn-hengoed is a residential suburb, and our technicians get out to the town and to the villages by it on the usual runs: Bon-y-maen, Ty-draw, Cwm, Pentrer-Gaseg and Winsh-wen.

Our technicians do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations around Swansea, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Near the border, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Phone and enquire instead of guessing.

Check the map for the area shown on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of that needs the vehicle to move to us.

Cefn-hengoed: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets a safe spot to pull in. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Caldicot Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you remain beside the vehicle or move clear of it rests on if being nearby feels wise. Do not fire up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into your fuel system. A technician coming to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Your M4 is the one that counts now, and it lies under 3 miles from Cefn-hengoed. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It changes what we bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Cefn-hengoed itself

Cefn-hengoed is a suburban area in Swansea, situated approximately 2.3 miles from the city centre and 162.4 miles from London. Cefn-hengoed sits at an elevation of 111 metres, overlooking the coastal landscape of Swansea Bay. Cefn-hengoed is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, with nearby neighbourhoods including Bon-y-maen and Ty-draw.

Our visit in Cefn-hengoed, step by step

  • We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • The tank gets emptied of it.
  • Our engineers rinse the lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the system is not what created the issue.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Your engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cefn-hengoed is a separate matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't fire it up — but this problem is not. Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Cefn-hengoed page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Cefn-hengoed

One figure would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Cefn-hengoed motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Cefn-hengoed petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we work at Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, since we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave the car shut off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than motorists assume.
