Cefncaeau: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Engine off. Leave the car that way — no second on, no shifting it anywhere. Emptied then cleaned, just where it sits: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes ahead more than on everything else. Here is the order of things from here, anywhere you're in Cefncaeau.

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

First, these — in this sequence.

  • The keys out of your ignition. Turning the ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, while priming pulls petrol out of the tank toward the parts it harms. Leave the car off completely.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same blend.
  • Make the vehicle easy to see before anything else — hazards on — if there is traffic going past anywhere close to you.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump. Don't fire it up to move it, however short the distance.
  • Which fuel, and about how much? Your receipt answers both, and that's where our first question starts. Do not throw it away.

On the M4, under 5 miles from Cefncaeau, the next exit is the location to leave the vehicle; anywhere, the first safe place to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

The fork in every Cefncaeau fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

If it has not once been started:

  • That petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
  • Where the car stands is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.
  • Being here is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of stage one.

If your motor has been run, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been pulled out of your tank, through the filter and into the lines.
  • A bigger run carries it right through to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.
  • The job grows with the distance — lines rinsed, filter sorted, sometimes more.

The line falls there because diesel protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. In the tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing. Move that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Cefncaeau

Whether the van goes round or finds you comes down to a little planning.

  • Where you are. A postcode starting SA14 9 is the best place to start.
  • Name the road — Llwynhendy Road or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
  • Or the nearest landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, like the one outside The Food Warehouse.
  • That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Cefncaeau, so tell us which.
  • The quantity: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.
  • If it's run, how far and how hard — as well as whether it has run at all.
  • The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire and company agreements — which is why it's quicker to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.

Call 0333 366 0103 next. Email is fine as well if it can wait, with the car left at home, going nowhere.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Cefncaeau

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage while you wait. So stick to these.

  • Stay with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a few yards.
  • Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Don't drain the car yourself.
  • Keep your ignition off — your windows and the radio included.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one stage at a time

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those replies set the job, and that is why you get a price after them rather than before.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted blend: the tank is cleared.
  • Rinsing the lines comes next, because a car that ran has petrol past the tank, inside your lines themselves.
  • Where your car has a serviceable filter, it is changed; if not, cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and your system is primed.
  • The start. With clean diesel in and your system bled, it's started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly.

The car has new diesel running through it before we leave. The car goes back to normal driving straight away, and long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been noticed early.

After your fuel drain is done: driving in Cefncaeau again

  • Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it has been started on clean fuel.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over then call us back.
  • The paperwork covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
