Chapel: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Don't start the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, across Chapel and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. We can tell you what the following move is. Contact us — it goes before anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you never fire it up, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- We'd much rather travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort out than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Marine Parade, that means hazards on and keep it.
- Get your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning SO14 5 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and also whether the car has fired. These three facts settle the full visit.
Call us before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle at Woolston ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and any harm happened on the run in, when the pump was drawing diesel that petrol had diluted.
Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at 7 Days East European now. Time passed isn't the thing we need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.
How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Skoda Octavia will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from Hope Community School Southampton — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor usually will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.
Chance the drive home from Chapel Arms? No. It will fire up and it will drive off just fine, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank runs typically while grinding the parts the fuel should be protecting. Leave the Peugeot 308 and phone.
About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster left by Saint Mary's Church barely two streets on. Ring us, and leave the vehicle off. A short drive does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence purging the lines instead of only emptying your tank.
Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?
It kicks off at a pump, usually. Frequently it finishes there as well. If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that is usually where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent.
Before your engine has run — the forecourt is the single spot it ends up stopped. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where the car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.
Wheel the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.
Places our vans cover around Chapel
Crosshouse, St Marys, Ocean Village, Nichols Town, Kingsland Place — each of those on the rounds that take us across to Chapel as well, a residential suburb.
Our technicians do come. Those names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns in Hampshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us and check rather than assuming — borders above all, and anywhere your satnav might misread.
Use this map for the patch covered on this page. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.
Stranded at the kerbside somewhere around Chapel?
The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Albert Road North as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.
Wait with the car when it is sensible to wait inside, yet clear of the car if it's not. Do not fire it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system. We will bring our van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than driving on.
Run it already? Pull over, then check this
under 3 miles from Chapel, the local M27 is what matters now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under a mile to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.
Where is Chapel?
Chapel is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Southampton. Chapel sits at a low elevation of around 1 metre, with its population of approximately 9348 residents living in predominantly flat-type housing. Chapel is close to nearby places such as Crosshouse, St Marys, and Ocean Village, and is about 68.8 miles from London.
When our engineers arrive with you in Chapel: what happens
- The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
- Away goes the contaminated mixture.
- Our engineers rinse the lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what caused the issue.
- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Chapel
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this fault under it's a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.
Both are ours. There's a separate Chapel page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Chapel
What changes the price is laid out below, because this job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single figure on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. If it isn't urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Chapel motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Chapel petrol station forecourt
A good share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians attend Esso and the other forecourts locally regularly.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.
You, and your car, still together?
Shut off is how it remains.
Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
