Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Chapels

Do not turn on your engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Chapels and the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Call us before anything else happens, and you will see what happens after that.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it — and don't believe it if it fires up. That is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just won't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It is not fine. It's grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which carries the petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Chapels Brow, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.
  • Before you call, gather your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts BB3 0 — that's what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has run — the three answers shape your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a large share of it finishes. Still at Shell? Then that's typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one setting it ends up caught. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Parts our team reach near Chapels

As a residential suburb, Chapels sees a routine call, while the places nearby go along on that same journey: Pot House and Shorey Bank, Hollins Grove and Livesey Fold, Hollins.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most places across Lancashire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the mistake to skip, above all on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Ring us and ask.

This map shows the patch the page includes. All of it is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a hurried morning drive needs plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of Darwen St James CofE Primary Academy, already late, the receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone us.

You head off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park at The Cock, the polluted fuel comes out of your tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when our engineers reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Square Meadow Community Sports Field in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost no one knows how full the tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Mercedes E-Class near Darwen Library.

Flushed, not cleared — that's what a diesel Vauxhall Astra which got as far as Darwen Theatre needs. Running a diesel puts the blend into the fuel filter, the lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Stranded on the roadside somewhere around Chapels?

Not everyone gets a safe place to pull over. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge beside Delph Street, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Remain beside it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. A van driving to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it's far better for your car than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, and see this

under a mile from Chapels, the M65 is what matters here. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe junction, switch off, and never start the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in the van.

Chapels itself

Chapels is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Chapels sits at an elevation of 191 metres, approximately 10 miles from Preston and 180 miles from London. Chapels is close to nearby places such as Pot House, Shorey Bank, and Hollins Grove, and has a population of around 5416 residents. Chapels forms a distinct part of the local community, with its riverside setting and varied housing stock.

When our technicians arrive with you around Chapels: what we do

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tank gets emptied of it.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed the system.
  • We fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Chapels?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never fire it up — but this fault isn't. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Chapels page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Chapels

Our technicians can't put one number on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Chapels

I am on a forecourt around Chapels. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. The pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Turned off is how it remains.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more commonly than people assume, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
