Chawson: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Chawson or the rest of Worcestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us so we can explain what follows next before you try much else.
What to try now about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which carries the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we would much rather travel to an odd place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Bower Hill, switch those hazards on and keep the car there.
- Before you ring, get your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts WR9 8 — that's what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
- What was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has started — these three answers settle the whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel
The job starts at the pump, mostly. Regularly it wraps up there too. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at BP that's usually where the drain takes place.
Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the only spot the mistake ends up spotted. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where the car sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.
Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll it. Very much worth doing. Firing the car for four car lengths? Not a chance.
Diesel Mercedes E-Class. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Morrisons. That is the call our technicians hope for, since the question underneath it is about volume through the pump instead of hours on the clock.
Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off then call us. Normal on the way out to Steynors Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Vauxhall Astra travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near Emmanuel Church Droitwich. For a diesel Ford Fiesta whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get purged and not just the tank drained.
Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to authorise the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than afterwards. Then give us a call about the Volvo XC60, the diesel one, close to Chawson Barn Community Centre. Don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it is something our technicians work out on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.
Flushed, not drained — that is what a diesel Peugeot 2008 which got as far as Droitwich Spa Lesiure Centre needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.
Chawson and the towns next to it
Chawson Valley, Copcut, Witton, Westacre, Newtown — each of those on our journeys that bring us across to Chawson as well, a residential suburb.
There are pages for nearly all towns around Worcestershire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Call us and check instead of presuming — borders above all, and wherever your satnav can struggle with.
That map is the patch this page spans. All of that is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.
Stuck at the kerbside somewhere in Chawson?
Not everyone has the chance to pull over anywhere suitable. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Ombersley Way since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.
Okay there? Wait with it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Driving on does the car far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult location, and that is no bother for us.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles
under 3 miles out of Chawson, the M5 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring alters.
Chawson itself
Chawson is a suburban area located on the riverside in Worcestershire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 5211 residents. Chawson sits at an elevation of 42 metres, close to the city of Worcester and near other local places such as Chawson Valley and Copcut. Chawson is situated in a commuter-friendly location, approximately 5.2 miles from Worcester and 101.3 miles from London. Chawson's riverside setting provides a pleasant environment for its residents.
When we get to you around Chawson: what happens
- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- The tank is cleared completely.
- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that created the problem.
- Our engineers put new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
- The motor is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.
A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Chawson
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never fire it up — but this problem isn't. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.
Both are ours. There's a separate Chawson page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Chawson
One price wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank takes.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Chawson drivers
At a petrol station in Chawson, can you do a fuel drain there?
A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Valero, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our engineers answer on the spot.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable far more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
No. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Is the car still with you?
Keep it turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume.
Throughout Worcestershire and around Chawson: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
