Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Chevin End? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has stopped in Chevin End or the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before everything else begins, so you will learn what happens next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not crank it. Started anyway? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: turning it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • Never put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and our team would sooner get to an odd spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Ghyll Beck Drive, put your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts LS21 3 — that's what determines whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Three facts decide the entire job: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate quantity of it, and if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Don't drive it home. The commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Renault Megane, and the journey back would close to double it for no gain at all. Phone us from the platform if that's simpler. Our engineers do not need you standing over the car at Menston whilst our technicians get on, and we'd much rather talk to you tonight than discover on Monday.

Put diesel in a petrol car and mostly it will not run, so the motorist stops there and the damage stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be supplying. That is the catch, and it's why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed entirely ordinary coming back from Westgate Primary School. They do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to warn you about, and so nothing warns you. Phone us with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

Easy job, this one — till somebody takes it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 sitting by The Fox with petrol in your tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave it then call us once it is light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are meant to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that run to South Wood went, then, and your tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off then ring us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Derrydiddle Mill. For a diesel Mercedes C-Class whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, then let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get flushed and not just the tank emptied.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Much of the job begins at a pump, which means a big part of it is completed on site. Still at BP? Then that's typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the only setting the mistake gets caught. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Push the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Can our technicians cover your end of Chevin End?

Kelcliffe, Menston, Otley, Newall, Tranmere Park — all of them on the rounds that carry us out to Chevin End too, a small village.

We still come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places in West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the thing to skip, particularly on a border or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to check.

This map shows the ground the page covers. The lot is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Broken down at the kerbside around Chevin End

Not everyone has a safe spot to pull over. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of West Busk Lane because you noticed after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Whether you wait by the motor or step clear of it depends on if staying nearby looks wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. We will take our van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the car that's much better than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The M606 is the road which matters now, and it runs under 10 miles from Chevin End. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

Where is Chevin End?

Chevin End is a locality situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with an elevation of 118 metres and a population of around 990 people. Chevin End is located near the cities of Bradford and Leeds, and is close to the nearby places of Kelcliffe, Menston, and Otley. Chevin End has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant. Chevin End is approximately 178 miles from London, making it a relatively distant suburb.

When we arrive with you in Chevin End: what happens

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • The polluted fuel comes from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The motor is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.

Chevin End AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't fire it up — but this problem isn't. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Chevin End has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

Chevin End prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much your tank takes.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Chevin End

I'm on a forecourt in Chevin End. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's consent our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more commonly than drivers assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
