Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Chitts Hills? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Chitts Hills and the remainder of Essex. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Our technicians shall show you what the next stage will be. Contact us — it goes before all else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do first
- Do not crank it — and do not rely on it when it does start. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just will not run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and moves off just fine for a few miles. It is not all right. It is eating into the fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- A car that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Porter Drive? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky location suits us better than a started motor.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting CO3 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
- Three replies settle the full job: the fuel you poured in, the rough quantity of it, and if it has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked outside Colchester since first thing? The day has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the run in that sucked diluted diesel through your pump. Phone before you fetch it.
Any start primes that fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of that tank and toward your pump — which is why a vehicle shuffled twice into a roomier bay has silently grown into a bigger job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where our engineers cannot work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series, we shift it without firing it. None of that is fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Sainsbury's our technicians visit all the time, and the fuel is seldom the difficult part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar at the way in determining if a technician can reach you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way the vehicle points.
A diesel Ford Focus parked in the parking area by The Live and Let Live carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody drives it home. Park the car overnight then phone in the morning. Nothing worsens while it waits. What we'll ask is whether that drive there was brief and chilly, as that is where petrol is least able to burn fully — and anything that does not burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil.
None of it is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it's why the normal Lexden Gathering Grounds call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it flows through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past clearances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full your tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and our technicians work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then phone us about the Peugeot 3008 by Stanway Library.
Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at a forecourt?
A good chunk of the work is finished at a pump, since that is where it often begins. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that is generally where this drain gets done — we work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.
A filling station is the only setting this can be caught before the engine has fired. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.
The attendants will normally happily move it clear of the pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing. Cranking it for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.
Will we reach your end of Chitts Hills?
Beacon End, Stanway, Eight Ash Green, Lexden, Seven Star Green — all of them on our trips that take us across to Chitts Hills itself, a neighbourhood.
There are separate pages for the majority of locations in Essex, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing about if our technicians come. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Ring us and ask instead of presuming.
The area the page includes is on the map. The lot is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive your car anywhere.
Stranded by the kerbside in Chitts Hills
Some drivers have no safe spot to stop whatsoever. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge on Halstead Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.
Fine where you are? Remain by it. Not fine? Step out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. A technician heading to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than driving on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
under 50 miles from Chitts Hills, your M11 is what matters here. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically lost power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.
Come off at the first safe junction, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

What happens when our technicians get to you in Chitts Hills
- The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
- Our engineers clear your tank of all the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
- Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.
Then it's ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Chitts Hills?
The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Chitts Hills page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Chitts Hills prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what changes it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
- Whether a van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.
A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Chitts Hills
I am on a forecourt around Chitts Hills. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our technicians attend Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally regularly.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It is salvageable much more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
You, and your car, still together?
Do not turn your engine back on.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers fear.
