Petrol in Diesel

Church End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Church End and the rest of West Midlands. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Our technicians will show you what the next move is. Contact us — this goes before anything else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That's why you do not start the vehicle, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — that injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Grenville Avenue? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An awkward place works for us better than a started motor.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting CV2 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • What went in, roughly how many litres, and also if your car has started — those three details shape the whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where the work mostly starts, and where a fair share of it closes. Still at Gulf? Then that is normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

At the forecourt, it gets halted with your motor never fired, and no place else does it. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines together with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the offer. Moving the car four lengths does not justify firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Church End

Do our technicians serve your corner of Church End?

As a residential suburb, Church End sees a frequent visit, and the areas round about go along on that same round: Stoke Park and Middle Stoke, Upper Stoke and Gosford Green, Lower Stoke.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and nearly all places around West Midlands have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Phone and check instead of assuming — borders particularly, and wherever your phone tends to struggle with.

That map shows the area this page spans. All of it is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash asks for plenty — so three miles in the Mercedes E-Class seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, running late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, ring us.

A diesel BMW 1 Series in the parking area outside Rose and Crown carrying a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody drives it home. Park the vehicle overnight then phone next morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it stands. What our technicians will ask about is whether that trip there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and whatever does not burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Coventry & North Warwickshire Ground in that diesel Ford Kuga is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Leave the Citroen C3 close to St Michael's then call us. We're firm about not driving on because a wearing pump sheds, and what it sheds travels downstream with the fuel to the fuel injectors further along.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle ragged, and the diesel Audi Q5 is parked up close to 2 Tone Music Museum Village. The engine is not failing — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so vehicles like yours typically get driven a second time before anyone picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and phone us.

Stranded at the kerb anywhere in Church End?

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in somewhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge of Burns Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Fine right there? Sit beside it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it. Do not restart your motor to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system. A technician coming to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull in, and read this

The local M69 is the road which matters now, and it runs under 3 miles from Church End. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

When our technicians get to you around Church End: what happens

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the trouble.
  • We pour clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to set off. Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Church End?

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not fire it up — yet this fault isn't. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Church End page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Church End

One number would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Whether our van can safely get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Church End

I'm on a forecourt around Church End. Can you drain it on the spot?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's permission our technicians work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's salvageable much more commonly than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Leave the engine switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people assume.
