Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cirencester? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Cirencester and the rest of Gloucestershire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Phone and our technicians shall show you what follows next before you attempt anything else.
What to try now about petrol in a diesel
- Do not crank it — and do not believe it when it fires up. That is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just cannot run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and moves off without complaint for a few miles. It is not okay. It's grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: flicking it on is often all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- We would much rather travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Castle Street, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
- Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting GL7 2 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run. Your answers decide whatever happens next.
On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel
A good portion of this job is completed at a pump, since that's where it mostly begins. Still at Texaco? Then that is usually where it gets done. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.
Nowhere else other than the forecourt can this be caught with the engine still untouched. We can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.
The attendants will generally offer to move the vehicle out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths is not.
Diesel Renault Clio. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Waitrose. That's the enquiry we hope for, as the point underneath it is about amount through your pump instead of hours on the clock.
A passer-by will tell you to move it out of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by Powell's Church of England Primary School is a hassle; the same motor fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past the filter then into the pump. Leave it there, let them moan, then call us.
Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off then call us. Normal on the way out to Abbey Grounds, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by Cirencester War Memorial or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong.
No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position usually get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Vauxhall Insignia is now waiting close to Cirencester Markets. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly instead of a motor failing. Turn off. Ring us.
Can our engineers serve your end of Cirencester?
As a riverside town, Cirencester gets a steady visit, and the places close by come along on the same run: Bowling Green and Watermoor, Chesterton and The Beeches, New Mills.
If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of places in Gloucestershire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours. Contact us and enquire rather than assuming, especially if you're on a border or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.
That map marks the ground the page includes. The car doesn't need to come to us. We operate over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs across Cirencester
The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe does not come to everyone. A common call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge beside Market Place or at a lay-by with your hazards on.
Whether you sit with your car or step away from it hangs on if being in it seems safe. Don't restart your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system. We'll send the van to a tricky spot without any trouble, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
under 15 miles out of Cirencester, your M4 is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit then switch off. It affects what our engineers bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

The visit around Cirencester, step by step
- Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.
- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that started the problem.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
- Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught early, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cirencester is a different matter
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the problem underneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.
Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around Cirencester has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more significant of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Cirencester
Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Where your car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Cirencester
At a petrol station in Cirencester, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes, and it is where a good share of this work takes place. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It's fixable much more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
You, and the car, still together?
Never turn it back on.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
