Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Claudy?

Never start the motor. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, across Claudy and the rest of County Londonderry, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. A single ring our way will be plenty: our engineers can explain what follows next. Make it first.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and do not rely on it when it does start. That is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It's not okay. It is grinding the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off too — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't pour diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd much rather come to an awkward location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Crown Street, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Get your location prepared before you call. A postcode beginning BT47 4 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has run. These three replies decide the entire job.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning commute running on a fuel that had lost a great deal of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting at the nearest station till it dawns on you somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about distance instead of time. Phone us. Keep it exactly where it is.

Car parks like the one outside the local shops are a spot we work in often, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar on the way in that determines if a technician can get to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is facing. If our technicians can't work beside the diesel Volkswagen Passat we will move it without running it — and that's not fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and draws more of that blend out of that tank and toward the pump, and so a car shunted twice into a roomier space has quietly turned into a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped.

You will be urged to shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a misfuelled Audi A4 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond your filter on to the pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left near the centre. For a diesel Peugeot 3008 whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, and let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just the tank cleared.

No warning light exists for this, which is why cars in that position typically get driven a second time before anyone phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned ragged after a few streets, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is now sitting near the far end of the built-up part. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of a motor packing up. Switch off. Call us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the work usually starts, and where a large share of that closes. If you're still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is generally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can this be caught with your motor still untouched. Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the offer. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Parts our vans serve in Claudy

Killaloo, Foreglen, Ballyrory, Straidarran, Goshedan — all of them on our journeys that bring us across to Claudy too, a small village.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for most towns in County Londonderry, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Phone and enquire rather than guessing — boundaries above all, and wherever your phone may misread.

The map outlines the ground this page spans. Every bit of it is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

Stranded by the roadside around Claudy

Not everybody gets the opportunity to stop anywhere safe. If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge on Rock Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Remain by your car while it's sensible to sit inside, and clear of the car when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We will send the van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled

The local M77 is the one which matters now, and sits over 50 miles from Claudy. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Claudy itself

Claudy is a locality in County Londonderry, situated inland at an elevation of 117 metres, approximately 8 miles from Derry. Claudy is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is surrounded by nearby places such as Killaloo, Foreglen, and Ballyrory. Claudy has a population of around 1335 people and is located about 373 miles northwest of London.

When we arrive with you around Claudy: what follows

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • Out goes the polluted mixture.
  • Our engineers rinse the lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in the fuel system is not what caused the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The motor is fired up and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Claudy is a separate problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault under it is a different one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Claudy page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Claudy

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Claudy

Fuel drains on a Claudy petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more commonly than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.
