Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clawdd-coch? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Clawdd-coch and the rest of The Vale of Glamorgan. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not been started and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Call us before everything else starts, so you'll learn what happens next.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Turned on anyway? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol car usually can't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: flicking it on is often enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A car that has not moved is the quickest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Pont Sarn Lane? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd location suits us better than a started motor.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting CF71 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • Three details shape the entire call-out: the fuel you poured in, the approximate measure of it, and whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A good chunk of the work gets completed at the pump, as that's where it often kicks off. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one place this is caught. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where your car is. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The staff will normally help you move it out from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Moving it four bays doesn't justify firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Clawdd-coch

Petrol in your Volkswagen Tiguan, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Tesco Express, somewhere around Clawdd-coch? Then phone, and leave the motor out of that — not even to get out of the space. Somebody gets to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls very little, and so these are often the simple jobs.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Peugeot 308 will have seemed entirely usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

A diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the parking area outside The Red Lion at Pendoylan with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone drives it home. Park the car there overnight and phone first thing. Nothing worsens as it waits. What we will ask about is if the trip there was brief and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can get past the piston rings and into the engine oil.

Nothing gets worse whilst it stands. Whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Coed Cadw, it's doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

We purge the fuel lines rather than only clearing the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already arrived at the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked up by Pendoylan War Memorial Hall a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us then leave it off.

Do our technicians reach your corner of Clawdd-coch?

Those same runs get us to Tre-Dodridge, Pendoylan, Gwern-y-Steeple, Peterston-super-Ely and Welsh St Donats besides Clawdd-coch, which is a rural hamlet.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around The Vale of Glamorgan, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Phone and check instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever your phone may misread.

Check this map for the patch included here. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Stranded at the kerbside near Clawdd-coch

Not everybody gets a sensible place to pull in. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge on Heol St Cattwg, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the vehicle when it isn't sensible to sit there, by it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a van driving out to a tricky location, and that is no problem for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

under 3 miles from Clawdd-coch, the local M4 is what counts now. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

Once our technicians arrive with you in Clawdd-coch: what follows

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled out of your tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and since everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Clawdd-coch is a different matter

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — do not fire it up — but the issue is not. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal in Clawdd-coch has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Clawdd-coch?

What moves the figure is listed below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank can hold.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Clawdd-coch

At a petrol station in Clawdd-coch, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Murco is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Do not turn the engine back on.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
