Petrol in Diesel

Clay Bottom: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not start the motor. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Clay Bottom and the rest of Bristol, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our team can tell you what your next stage will be. Contact us — it comes ahead of everything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Don't start the vehicle. Fired up anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually cannot run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that backwards. It's not okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd sooner come to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Dubbers Lane, that means hazards on then keep it.
  • Before you phone, gather your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting BS5 7 — that is what settles whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has been turned over. Your answers decide everything that happens next.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at the pump, so a big portion of it is done on site. If you're still on the forecourt at Valero, that's normally where the drain takes place — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

A forecourt is the single location this is stopped before your engine has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Very much worth doing. Rolling it four bays doesn't merit firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Clay Bottom

Can our technicians serve your side of Clay Bottom?

Clay Bottom is a residential suburb, and so our technicians go out to the town and to the areas by it on the usual runs: Rose Green, Clay Hill, Upper Eastville, Crofts End and Ridgeway.

We do come. The names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations around Bristol, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Close to the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Phone and check instead of presuming.

That map is the patch this page includes. All of that is territory our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Twenty to nine. By May Park Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Peugeot 3008 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.

You set off at the end, once we have fired it up and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park outside Queens Head, the tainted fuel comes out of the tank, the lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A6 has a serviceable one. It all begins with three questions when our engineers reach your car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Royate Hill Local Nature Reserve in that diesel Ford Kuga is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Because your pump is upstream of your injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off on with your fuel. Call us. Leave the Mercedes A-Class near Absolutely Karting.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some contracts demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about the diesel BMW X1 close to Eastville Park Community Hub. You will not know how full that tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out there anyway. Our engineers ask as the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

Kerbside breakdowns around Clay Bottom

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on The Glades because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Out of the car while it is not wise to wait there, by it if it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's much better for the car than driving on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The M32 is the one which counts here, and it runs under a mile from Clay Bottom. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and never restart the car to reposition. Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring alters.

Clay Bottom itself

Clay Bottom is a suburban area located on the riverside in Bristol, with an elevation of 44 metres above sea level. Clay Bottom sits approximately 2.6 miles from Bristol city centre, within a short distance of nearby places such as Rose Green and Clay Hill. Clay Bottom is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting the typical architectural style of the region. Clay Bottom is home to around 8272 residents, according to approximate population figures.

What we do when our technicians reach you around Clay Bottom

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
  • Our engineers empty your tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Our technicians rinse the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what started the trouble.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.

Then it is ready to drive away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very rare.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Clay Bottom

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this issue underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Clay Bottom has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Clay Bottom

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Clay Bottom drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Clay Bottom. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our technicians visit Tesco and the other forecourts locally regularly.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave it off. Driving moves the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is the way it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way. This is recoverable from far more often than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
