Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clayhall? Don't Start It
Do not turn on the engine. If the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Clayhall and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone and we will explain what follows after that before you do any more.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And if started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is often enough to prime your system, which moves this petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Fort Road, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts PO12 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- Three answers determine the whole job: the stuff you poured in, the rough measure involved, plus whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Tonight, please, not Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has forced real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would more or less double the figure to no purpose. The Renault Megane can stay outside Portsmouth Harbour perfectly well. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us while we work isn't required.
Petrol in the Nissan Qashqai, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Asda, somewhere in Clayhall? Then phone us, and leave your engine out of it — not even to leave that space. Someone gets to you. Tank drained, fuel lines rinsed, new diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile pulls very little, and so these tend to be the easy ones.
Pull in somewhere safe, turn off then call us. Happy on the way out to Gosport Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; weaker fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Audi A3 drove, the less of that pressure it held.
Rarely the issue, the location. On-street is the usual spot we work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from near St Francis, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Peugeot 208 gets cleared, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines flushed and clean fuel put through the whole system — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not your tank.
Flushed, not emptied — that is what a diesel Volkswagen Polo which got as far as HMS Eurydice needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into the filter, your lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.
Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt
Pumps are where the work often starts, and where a large portion of it closes. The drain typically happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's permission, that is somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.
The forecourt is the single place this can be stopped before the motor has started. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car stands.
Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.
Places we serve around Clayhall
These same journeys carry us to Seafield, Newtown, Gosport, Alverstoke and Old Portsmouth as well as Clayhall, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations in Hampshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours. Near the border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Contact us and ask rather than presuming.
That map shows the patch this page covers. Your car never needs to move to us. Our technicians work over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside stops around Clayhall
The chance to stop somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Friary Close because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.
Stay by the vehicle when it is sensible to sit in it, but out of the vehicle when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll take the van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for the car that's far better than carrying on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
The M275 is the one that counts here, and it lies under 3 miles from Clayhall. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.
Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and don't restart it to reposition. On a longer drive — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.
All about Clayhall
Clayhall is a small suburban area situated on the coast of Hampshire, with an elevation of approximately 2 metres above sea level. Clayhall lies close to the city of Portsmouth, being only 2 miles away, and is near other places such as Seafield, Newtown, and Gosport. Clayhall has a population of around 1799 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Clayhall is also located within the South East region of England, about 66 miles from London.
Our visit around Clayhall, step by step
- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- That tank gets cleared of everything.
- We purge your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's left in your system isn't what started the problem.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running properly.
Then it is ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Clayhall is a different matter
Never crank it: that first step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
AdBlue removal around Clayhall has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Clayhall?
We can't put one number on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:
- This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Clayhall
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Clayhall?
Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable far more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
Still with the vehicle?
Keep it turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
