Petrol in Diesel

Clayton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Clayton and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone and then we will show you what follows after that before you attempt any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you do not crank it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the point people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel does two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank and into exactly those components.
  • Never tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would rather drive to an odd location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on John Street, switch those hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you dial, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts BD14 6 — that's what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Three details determine your whole call-out: the liquid you poured in, the approximate amount involved, plus if anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large part of the job is completed at a pump, because that's where it mostly kicks off. If you are still at the forecourt at Texaco, that is usually where the drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

Nowhere else except a garage can it be halted with your motor still unstarted. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the lines as well as your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Well worth doing. Starting it just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Clayton

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at easy throttle uses hardly any diesel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio somewhere around Clayton, a boot packed with shopping, and you stuck outside Heron Foods — call us. Getting out of the bay is not worth another start. Your tank gets drained where it sits, your fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

Twenty to nine. Outside Clayton Village Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch the hazard lights on, leave the ignition alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a run taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

Phoning from near Clayton Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself hardly matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow bay than a car somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not your tank.

Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Peugeot 208, a fill-up close to Clayton Baptist Church that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

Flushed, not cleared — that's what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Clayton Library needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into your filter, the lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Areas our vans cover near Clayton

Those same runs bring us to Lane End, Town End, Clayton Heights, Leaventhorpe and Horton Bank Top as well as Clayton, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns across West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Phone and enquire instead of guessing — boundaries especially, and wherever your satnav tends to get wrong.

Check this map for the area shown here. All of that is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your vehicle anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns around Clayton

Some people have no safe spot to pull in at all. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Nursery Road as you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Sit beside the car if it's sensible to sit there, and clear of the vehicle if it isn't. Don't restart your motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system. Our van coming to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where your M606 matters, under 3 miles out of Clayton. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and never start it to reposition. It changes what we bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

All about Clayton

Clayton is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the city of Bradford and characterised by its riverside setting. Clayton has a mix of housing types, but terraced houses are predominant, and the area is close to nearby places such as Lane End and Town End. Clayton sits at an elevation of 228 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Clayton is located 2.7 miles from Bradford and 172.4 miles from London.

Once our technicians reach you in Clayton: what we do

  • The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled from that tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Our technicians start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Clayton is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this fault under it is a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Clayton page. Both are ours to handle.

Clayton costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Whether a van can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Clayton

At a petrol station around Clayton, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more often than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. The pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Leave the engine turned off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
