Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cleehill?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Cleehill and the rest of Shropshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Contact us before anything else begins, so you'll know what comes next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Don't crank it — and do not believe it when it fires up. Here is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just can't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for a few miles. It isn't okay. It is grinding that fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off too. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which moves this petrol out of the tank and into just those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd sooner get to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on The Crescent, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Get your position ready before you call. A postcode beginning SY8 3 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has started — the three details determine your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Forecourts are where this job mostly begins, and where a fair chunk of that finishes. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Premier Petroleum? Given the station's agreement, that is a place our engineers work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the only location this gets stopped before the motor has started. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car sits.

The attendants will normally offer to roll the car away from the pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Rolling it four lengths does not merit cranking the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cleehill

We will come to you, empty that tank, rinse those fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Volkswagen Passat around Cleehill and you are sat at Tesco with a boot full of shopping, ring us — and never fire it up once more to leave the spot. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls hardly any diesel, so those are usually the simple cases.

You'll be told to move the car clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags at Clee Hill Community Academy, a wrongly fuelled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the filter toward your pump. Let them moan. Call us.

Rarely the problem, the place. On-street is the usual spot our engineers work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near St Peter, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Ford Focus gets emptied, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not your tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Clee Hill Village Hall or anywhere at all. Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Dacia Duster telling you what is wrong.

By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got near Toposcope needs your system cleared, not drained.

Cleehill and the villages next to it

Cleehill is a rural village, so we are out to the town and to the areas around it on the usual runs: Cornbrook, Knowle, Dhustone, Brookrow and Farden.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across Shropshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Contact us to check instead of guessing, especially where you are on a boundary or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.

See this map for the area covered on this page. Your vehicle does not need to travel to us. We work over every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down by the kerbside in Cleehill

Some people get no safe place to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge beside Springfield Park or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Whether you wait by the vehicle or move away from it depends on if staying in it seems sensible. Never restart the motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into the fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward spot, and that is no bother for us.

Run it already? Pull in, then see below

The M5 is the road which matters here, and it lies under 25 miles from Cleehill. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

Cleehill itself

Cleehill is a rural village in Shropshire, situated at a high elevation of 375 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Cleehill sits inland, approximately 20 miles from Worcester, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Cornbrook, Knowle, and Dhustone. Cleehill is a relatively small community, with a population of around 572 residents. Cleehill is located in the West Midlands region, about 121 miles from London.

Our call-out around Cleehill, step by step

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • The system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • We fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Cleehill?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue under it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Cleehill page. Both are ours to handle.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Cleehill

One number would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel queries from Cleehill drivers

Fuel drains on a Cleehill petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. It's salvageable far more often than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Never turn the car back on.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
