Cliffe: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With the tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Cliffe and the remainder of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us and then our engineers can show you what follows next before you attempt much else.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the vehicle. And if started, do not trust it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition off as well. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which carries the petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
- Don't put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Buttway Lane? Hazards on, then keep it there. A difficult location suits us better than a started motor.
- The van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting ME3 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you call.
- Three replies settle the full visit: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark volume involved, and if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
Most of this work starts at a pump, so a big part of it is completed on site. If you're still at the forecourt at JET, that is generally where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.
Before the engine has fired — a garage is the single setting this ends up halted. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key.
Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Well worth it. Firing the car to shift four car lengths isn't.
Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at The Co-operative Food now. Time gone by isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.
Nothing warns you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Audi A4 will have felt completely usual on the way back from St Helen's Church of England Primary School, Cliffe, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.
The components that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and drives off just fine. Risk the journey home from The Six Bells? No. Phone us then leave the Ford Focus where it is.
Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of your injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it gives off downstream with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Dacia Duster by St Helen's.
Your filter, your lines, the pump and the rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that got by 2nd Cliffe Scouts needs your system cleared instead of emptied.
Do we cover your end of Cliffe?
Being a coastal village, Cliffe sees a steady call, and its neighbours close by come along on the same round: West Street and Cooling, Cooling Street and Cliffe Woods, Church Street.
Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most locations across Kent have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Contact us to enquire rather than presuming, particularly where you are on the border or anywhere your satnav misreads.
Use the map for the ground included on this page. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We operate across every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs in Cliffe
Some people find no sensible place to pull over whatsoever. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge of Swingate Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazards on.
Whether you stay beside the vehicle or step clear of it hangs on if being in it is safe. Do not fire it up to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the system. A van coming to an awkward place is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled
Here is where your M2 comes into it — under 5 miles from Cliffe. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring differs.
A little about Cliffe
Cliffe is a village on the Hoo Peninsula in Kent, situated near the Thames estuary at an elevation of around 18 metres. Cliffe lies within commuting distance of London, approximately 27 miles to the west, and is close to the nearby city of Southend-on-Sea. Cliffe has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent, and is surrounded by other small communities such as West Street and Cooling. Cliffe is also near to Cooling Street, a small hamlet to the north.
The job in Cliffe, step by step
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
- The polluted mixture is pulled out of that tank.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running correctly.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cliffe
Never crank it: that first instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Cliffe has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more serious of the two.
Cliffe costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our engineers can't put one number on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What shifts it:
- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.
Petrol in diesel questions from Cliffe drivers
Fuel drains on a Cliffe petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. We work at Gulf and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix pulled through it.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?
Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off. It is recoverable far more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
You, and your car, still together?
Switched off is how it stays.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
