Clifton: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Whatever you do, don't switch the engine on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Pause; leave it off. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a simple drain plus a flush, done where the vehicle stands, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else. What follows is the order from here, anywhere around Clifton you happen to be.
Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
Work through the following first, in this sequence.
- Take your keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to exactly the parts it damages, so keep it off wholly.
- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
- Being seen comes first near moving traffic: switch the hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.
- However short the way, starting it to move it is the mistake. On a forecourt, roll the car clear of the petrol pump by hand instead, and ask the staff to help.
- The first thing we will ask is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and your receipt shows both. Hold on to it.
Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M32 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 3 miles from Clifton, and pull over somewhere sensible and not pressing on to the services. Then start at stage one.
Clifton fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?
From this point on, everything hinges on a single answer.
Engine never run at all?
- The petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually the whole job.
- No spot is better, and it is why the first step counts so much.
If the engine has run, even for a moment:
- From the tank, past the fuel filter, into your lines: that's how far that petrol has got.
- Run it further and that petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through the fuel pump first.
- The job grows with the distance — lines purged, filter dealt with, sometimes more.
Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting the high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is only waiting in a tank. Once it is pumped, petrol begins wearing down whatever moves it.
Clifton, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call
Whether the technician circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.
- The ideal place to start is a postcode — one beginning BS8 3 — for where you have stopped.
- The road or the car park. A road name helps — Alma Vale Road, or wherever you have pulled up.
- Name a car park by what it serves — the one outside Sainsbury's, for instance — and it's far easier to find.
- The make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.
- What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Clifton, so tell us which.
- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
- If it has run, how far and how hard — and if it's run at all.
- Sort who owns your car before we turn up: some hire and company contracts want the owner to approve the work, and that is faster beforehand.
Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do as well.
Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Clifton
Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm whilst you wait. So stick to these.
- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.
- No one — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the car a short way.
- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out a second time.
- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank remains where it is anyway.
- The ignition stays off. Even for your radio or the windows.
Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time
- First, three questions: which fuel was put in, the amount, and has it run? Those answers decide this job, and so the price follows them.
- The tank is emptied. The tainted mixture comes from the tank.
- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank sits in the lines once it ran, and the lines are rinsed to shift it.
- Then the fuel filter: changed where there's a serviceable one, cleared where there's not.
- Bleeding the system follows once clean diesel is in.
- We start the car only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled your system, then make sure that it's running properly.
Till it runs on fresh diesel, our engineers remain with it. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, so the car can go right back to normal use.
After the fuel drain: back on the road around Clifton
- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — usual driving will do.
- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle stumbling: pull over then ring us back.
- The paperwork covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
