Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clifton Junction?

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Clifton Junction and the remainder of Greater Manchester, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our technicians will tell you what the next stage will be. Contact us — it goes before anything else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and don't rely on it when it fires up. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It's wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Don't put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd rather come to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Northern Avenue, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts M27 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if the motor has run — these three facts determine the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this job usually kicks off, and where a big share of that ends. The drain typically gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the site's consent, that is a place we work, and often.

At a garage, the mistake is spotted with your motor never run, and no place else does it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the assistance. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Clifton Junction

Places our team serve in Clifton Junction

Clifton Junction is a residential suburb, and our team head out to it and to the villages near it on the usual trips: Clifton Green, Clifton, Pendlebury, Newtown and Park Lane.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most locations across Greater Manchester have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Call us to check rather than assuming, particularly if you're on the boundary or anywhere the satnav gets wrong.

The ground the page covers sits on our map. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

Twenty to nine. By St Mark's RC Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Switch the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, and call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.

Never chance it. The drive home from Windmill Hotel is quite possible, which is precisely the issue — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components your fuel is supposed to lubricate. Call us, then let the Dacia Duster stay where it is.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past clearances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it passes through — that's the full mechanism. It accounts for the ordinary Waterdale call too: a diesel Vauxhall Astra that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you phone us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Citroen C3 near Christ Church, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: we flush it, and take your filter off where there is a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves suggestion you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Kia Sportage near Clifton Library and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Stuck by the kerbside somewhere in Clifton Junction?

Some drivers get no safe spot to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge beside Lumns Lane, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Remain beside the vehicle if it's safe to be there, and out of the car if it isn't. Do not restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician heading out to a tricky location, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled

under a mile out of Clifton Junction, the local M60 is what counts here. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Never start it to move it. Pull off at the first sensible exit then switch off. It affects what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Where's Clifton Junction?

Clifton Junction is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the lakeside and approximately 55 metres above sea level. Clifton Junction lies close to the city of Salford, about 3 miles away, and is near other local places such as Clifton Green and Pendlebury. Clifton Junction has a population of around 1904 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing.

What happens when our engineers reach you in Clifton Junction

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Out flows the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • After it's turned on, our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Clifton Junction?

Don't start it: that first instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Clifton Junction page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Clifton Junction

One figure wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where the car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Clifton Junction drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Clifton Junction. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. We attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more frequently than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car afterwards. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
