Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clifton

Never turn on the motor. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, all over Clifton and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers can tell you what the following stage will be. Contact us — this comes before anything else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And once started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather come to an odd spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Blakelaw Drive, put the hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • The van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning HD6 4, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you dial.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how many litres, plus if the motor has run. These three replies settle your whole job.

How many miles you travelled is what our technicians ask about, not how long your car has been parked — and here is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through the engine: it burns, and before burning it lubricates the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a fast fill on the way in, the realisation coming close to eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at Brighouse since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a liquid robbed of a lot of its protection. Ring us and keep the vehicle just where it is.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and generally it will not run, and so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is supposed to be providing. That is the snag, and it is why your diesel Audi A4 will have seemed perfectly normal coming back from St John's (CofE) Primary Academy, Clifton. They all do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing warns you. Call us with about how far you went, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

Fine on the way out, flat on the way back. If that's how that drive to Alegar Bank Wood went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Mercedes C-Class travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off and call us.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a lumpy idle, knocking: that's a misfilled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what is wrong. Don't start it to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, by Bedlam Paintball or anywhere else.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the fuel filter, into your lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel BMW 1 Series that made it by The Salvation Army - Brighouse needs its circuit purged. Draining isn't the same thing.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Clifton

Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

A large part of this job ends up completed at a pump, since that's where it mostly starts. Still at Shell? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before your motor has started — a garage is the one location the mistake is spotted. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car just for four car lengths? No.

Coverage around Clifton

Clifton is a residential suburb, and our team go out to the town and to the villages by it on those same rounds: Thornhills, The Crescent, Woodhouse, Birkhouse and Brighouse.

Our technicians do come. The places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most locations in West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Ring us and ask rather than assuming — boundaries especially, and wherever a satnav can get wrong.

That map marks the patch this page includes. The lot is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

Kerbside stops around Clifton

Some drivers find no suitable place to stop whatsoever. A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, landed along the verge beside Cannon Hall Close or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or keep away from it depends on if sitting in it looks safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

This is where the local M62 counts, under a mile out of Clifton. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart it to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring differs.

All about Clifton

Clifton is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 6 miles from Bradford and 166.5 miles from London. Clifton sits at an elevation of 128 metres, surrounded by other local neighbourhoods such as Thornhills and The Crescent. Clifton is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential development patterns of the region. Clifton remains a relatively small community, with a population of around 1333 residents.

What we do when our technicians get to you in Clifton

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • We empty your tank of the polluted mixture.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Your engine is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Clifton is a different job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the problem under it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Clifton page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Clifton pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Clifton

I'm on a forecourt in Clifton. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this happens. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more frequently than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car remain that way. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers assume.
